Find financial help in your county or city.
Most local communities have organizations that provide financial assistance to people facing a hardship. This can include, but is not limited to, help with housing costs, utilities, food, transportation, and other bills that focus on basic needs. Assistance may be offered by local charity organizations, churches, and government agencies as well.
Programs vary by location. Each county, city, and state, as listed below, administers its own forms of support to people in need based on available funding and even local priorities. Some programs provide emergency, short-term help, while others offer ongoing, long term financial support combined with case management. The best way to find help is to look at the organizations that operate directly in your area.
This page is designed as a location-based directory. Scroll down and select your state, your county or city to find local programs that provide financial help for a wide range of bills. Each local page includes details on the types of assistance offered, contact information and how to apply. The various types of local programs that help, with links to resources in your area, include the following.

National organizations with local office that provide help
|
In addition to local agencies, many national nonprofit organizations operate offices or partner programs in communities across the country. These organizations may provide direct financial help, food, housing assistance, utility support, or referrals to local resources. Examples of widely available national organizations are listed below.
- Thousands of local churches are part of Catholic Charities with over 160 major affiliates/central organizations. They offer various forms of help to people in need, regardless of their religion. Everyone from single parents, seniors to low-income households can get help, though resources and criteria vary by location. Whether financial help with bills or housing, or access to free material items, assistance will be available from the Catholic Charities near you.
- The Salvation Army has over 7,000 locations in local communities. The Christian, faith based charity provides financial help with everything ranging from rent to utilities and more, based on funding. Most locations also try to give out free goods like food, seasonal items and provide help in their local communities in other ways as listed here on the Salvation Army social services in your area.
- The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Conference, or SVDP, has parishes in every state and most local communities, with over 4,000 available. While the application process will vary by location, most have volunteers (“Vincentians”) that visit the applicants residence to assess needs and provide assistance based on that visit, with more details here about the Society of St. Vincent de Paul near you and program detail.
- Local assistance is often focused on essential needs such as housing, food, rent, and utility bills. These programs are designed to help households maintain basic stability. Many of the most commonly requested forms of help are listed below and are organized by location.
- The United Way also covers most local communities. The non-profit helps people locate financial assistance programs near where they live or they direct those in need to more national organizations as well. Try the United Way databases and online sites to query for resources in your area.
There are also many other national programs or regional organizations that operate in multiple states, multiple cities or cover certain territory. Those can also be found throughout the site, and maybe the best way to find financial help from any national agency is to use the search function at needhelppayingbills to search by city, town or specific need.
