Chittenden County assistance programs.

Locate information on various government programs, non-profits organizations, and charities that operate across the greater Chittenden County Vermont area. The organizations can either provide direct cash assistance to for paying expenses, including energy bills and housing costs such as rent. Or the agencies can refer individuals to services provided by food banks, community clinics, and others across the Burlington region.

Chittenden Community Action – The leading non-profit/community action agency. A large number of grants and financial assistance programs are offered. Get help with energy bills, heating oil, and kerosene from Crisis Fuel Program, WARMTH and ShareHeat, and emergency disconnection assistance. Housing assistance can help with rent and security deposits. Counselors can help residents apply for Food Stamps, WIC, School Breakfast and Lunch, and other food assistance programs.

There are a number of other services administered. They include career and job finding, employment goal setting, debt and budget counseling, tenant-landlord mediation, and more. Charlotte Food Shelf and Assistance - Runs a food pantry for meals, free groceries, and offers nutritional assistance. Cancer Patient Support Program – Emergency financial support is offered in a crisis to cancer patients and possibly their immediate family members. Joint Urban Ministry Project – Administers various basic needs programs. Some of them include utility assistance, food, diapers, baby food and formula and medicine. Transportation includes bus passes and gasoline vouchers. Saint Joseph Co-Cathedral – Offers limited financial assistance for paying utilities, rent and security deposits, and can distribute some personal needs and food vouchers. The Burlington Salvation Army - Offers a comprehensive assistance program to help the needy in emergency situations. This can include free food, heating and utility assistance, information on loan programs, and prescription cost assistance. School supplies and clothing are also offered.

Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity is another regional non-profit organization. This group is focused on helping individuals meet their basic needs and gain long term stability. The location offers transitional housing, grants and credit for heating bills from the fuel assistance program, weatherization and other aid. Richmond Congregational Church – Works with the Salvation Army to offer food, electric, fuel and heating assistance, gasoline and bus money, and prescription drug assistance and vouchers. 20 Church Street, Richmond, VT 05477, (802) 434-2053

Regional holiday programs can help low income families and those living in poverty. When applying for free Christmas toys or a meal, including at Thanksgiving, the Chittenden County family needs proof of income and residency. Vermont Catholic Charities – Runs a number of social services and low income programs. They are a last resort agency. From time to time will have limited funds for basic paying for needs including food vouchers, security deposits, eviction prevention, back rent, imminent utility disconnections (electric, gas, and water).

Most of the resources available from Catholic Charities and churches in Burlington are for non-financial needs. So the agency will help coordinate housing for seniors, counseling, and referrals. Burlington Greenpath Debt Solutions – This non-profit offers a wide range of services, some of which may be free or low cost to qualified individuals.
