Assistance programs Southeast Kansas.

Find financial help, free items and/or case management in Southeast Kansas. Locate churches, charities, and government organizations in counties such as Cherokee, Wilson and others to apply at. Rental and mortgage assistance, grants to help pay utility bills, free medications or clothes and other support is given. Get financial assistance near you in SE Kansas.

Low income families in the region, including Allen, Bourbon, Chautauqua, Cherokee, Crawford, Elk, Labette, Linn, Montgomery, Neosho, Wilson or Woodson County Kansas as well as struggling households in other SE Kansas towns and counties can get grant money. There is also transportation help such as free gas, school supplies for kids, dental or medical care, and much more.

Community action grant money to help with bills or housing

Southeast Kansas Community Action Program, Inc. runs several assistance programs. The non-profit will help prevent homelessness by offering hardship funds for back rent or electric bills. There are job training programs, free food, home repairs and other services.

  • Tenant Based Rental Assistance - This rental and housing assistance program was created to help low to moderate income people who are facing an eviction. This will include veterans, single moms and others, who are currently homeless, or who are about to become evicted, through no fault of their own. The TBRA may help families for one year with rent and/or other housing expenses.
  • HUD rental assistance - This particular housing program may provide long-term rental assistance and grants to families in Montgomery, Woodson, Bourbon and other counties. It is commonly known as Section 8 and the amount of rental assistance provided is based on their income. Families are expected to contribute 30% of their monthly income towards their monthly rent expense. Learn more on Kansas rental programs.
  • Weatherization Program - This is funded by Kansas and the federal government, and it provides free energy saving improvements to their homes for income eligible households, including seniors or the disabled. The goal of the program is to provide permanent energy conserving solutions to the high utility bills that are faced by low income families.
    • Free home repairs and weatherization from community action will include the installation of cost-effective, energy efficiency materials and related services, for free, and the work is done in order to make the home environment safer and more comfortable to the occupant. Some of the work completed can include compact fluorescent light bulbs, heating and cooling system repair and replacement, insulation, air sealing, and more.

 

 

 

  • Community Action helps with employment needs. There is information on job fairs in SE Kansas, contractor or gig work, resources for single moms and others. The goal is employment and self-sufficiency, and look here for call center jobs from home.

Emergency help with housing, food and utilities

Department for Children and Families (DCF) Economic and Employment Support Services - The government agency can offer employment support services. This includes immediate grant money combined with long term support. This includes cash assistance from TANF and government grants for families and pregnant women. There is EBT free groceries and food assistance, or help with child care. Other services necessary for both obtaining and maintaining employment in the community. Salvation Army - The non-profit is involved in helping meet human needs that are both physical and spiritual in nature. Services offered by the Salvation Army include free food, including Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. There are vouchers for clothing, utilities and heating bill assistance, or government commodities. Or get lodging, shelter, rent help, youth and women programs.

Dearing Christian Church Food Assistance provides free food. Call 620-948-3954. There are groceries, produce items, holiday baskets and other support for the homeless, people with no money and low income at 302 Independence Ave, Dearing, KS 67340.

Catholic Charities of Southeast Kansas Service serves the entire region, including Cherokee, Labette, Montgomery and other counties. They help the low-income, rural farm workers and immigrants too.
