Assistance program in Adams County Mississippi.

Find how to get help from churches, charities, and government programs. There are resources in Adams County that help struggling families pay their bills (including rent, electric, gasoline, medical, security deposits, etc.). Low to moderate income families can also get free items or support, such as food from a pantry, medical or dental care, loans, and grants. Financial help with bills and rent

Two organizations that provide assistance in the Natchez and Adams County Mississippi area include the Salvation Army and the AJFC Community Action Agency, Inc.

The Salvation Army (call (601) 442-1867, 601-442-1867 or 601-572-6076) operates a thrift store located on North Canal Street that sells many discounted items that people need for their everyday lives. In addition, the Natchez branch of the Salvation Army offers help for energy and heating bills, rental assistance programs, water assistance and also help getting gas hooked up for those in need of aid.

The Salvation Army also provides students with free back to school items (backpacks, clothes and more) as well as kids with Christmas gifts from Adopt a Family. Parents of kids in Adams County MS can also use the Salvation Army case management services for budgeting help or learn about job programs or substance abuse services (if needed).

Springfield Baptist Church at 16 Springfield Rd, Natchez, Mississippi 39120 tries to help low income households. There are free back to school supplies, food programs, referrals, and basic needs. Or get clothes, hot meals, a box of groceries and more. The church tries to help the poor and less fortunate. Call (601) 446-7588.

Another organization that people can turn to is AJFC Community Action, Inc. (AJFC) (phone 601-442-8681). This non profit, community action agency has operated over 50 programs in the area and they have administered millions of dollars in assistance over the years. The non-profit has successfully served thousands of clients across Southwest Mississippi. Some of the programs they offer include :

  • Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) LIHEAP - This energy assistance program was created to ensure that both low and moderate income households are offered the opportunity for direct energy assistance grants. It emphasizes the elderly, disabled, and low income with emphasis on the elderly for reducing their energy costs.
    The federal government LIHEAP program has two primary components, and they include Program Assistance, which is also known as regular assistance, and the second includes the Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP). The ECIP program was designed to assist families, households and individuals which have weather related, supply shortage, or other emergency household related emergencies, and those people do not have access to direct and/or timely network.
    Energy bills that may be paid for include electricity, propane/butane, natural gas,  wood, heating oil, kerosene, and coal coke. In addition, the LIHEAP funds may also be used to purchase blankets, fans, air conditioners, heating units, and other energy related products to be distributed to eligible households.
     
  • Emergency Food & Shelter Program - Was created to provide crisis and emergency assistance to those clients who need help. Assistance is provided in the form of direct assistance and cash grants that can be used for housing expenses and energy costs. Clients who qualify for aid from this program and service must be determined to be facing a crisis situation. The grants and funds are used to supplement feeding, rent payments, shelter, mortgage, foreclosure assistance, and utility bill assistance efforts.

 

 

 

 

  • Aid From Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) is a free grant program. This is a service from community action that helps people with no jobs, limited training, lack of transportation, or others who are experiencing short term problems. The AJFC Community Action Agency will assist clients in seeking full/part-time employment, and provide other aid including.
     
    • -Funds for testing needed to secure employment
      -Paying for physicals or licenses needed to secure employment
      -Purchase of uniforms (shoes, pants, lab jackets, gloves, etc.)
      -Medications and programs to help with hospital bills
      -Grants and assistance with one-time payment for transportation related costs that are to be used to for interviews
      -Grants and payments for minor repairs to vehicle
      -Education assistance to individuals with fees for vocational training, including money for books, uniforms, tuition, GED classes, and other grants for education.
      -Housing assistance including funds for rent and mortgage payments.
      -Assist with paying closing costs
      -Provide help for mortgage, housing, and foreclosure counseling
      -Credit and debt counseling. They can help you establish debt management plans
      -Referrals to government programs and ways to get aid
