Harney and Malheur assistance programs

Various low income assistance programs, financial help from charities, and other resources are available to help the low income pay bills, housing expenses and make it through an emergency.

Harney-Malheur Community Action Agency, which is based in Ontario Oregon (541) 889-1060) is the local community action agency that administers several assistance programs and resources for local families. The services include:

Energy and Heating Bills - They offer programs to prevent a disconnection, and administer the federal government funded LIHEAP program. One component of this program is LIHEAP crisis assistance, which is emergency aid to stop a disconnection.

Food - Learn where to get a food box from, and get information about local food pantries and resources.

Housing - Get information on rent assistance programs, landlord/tenant mediation, eviction prevention, and homebuyer programs.

Weatherization - This is another federal government funded program that helps the low income save money. What it does is it installs energy conserving improvements to their homes, which is free of charge to the applicant.

Harney County Senior and Community Services Center - This non-profit location provides people who need help extensive services, including information to government programs and charities, referrals to non-profits, and services to senior assistance programs. In addition, get access to energy assistance programs, emergency shelter, transportation, free food, meal sites, Meals on Wheels, save money from weatherization services and veteran services. Malheur Council on Aging and Community Services - This non-profit agency provides, among other resources, energy and heating bill assistance, housing and rent assistance and information and referral to other services and government programs. Senior and disabled assistance programs offered also include Meals on Wheels, weatherization assistance, transportation assistance, in-home assistance, information on food assistance options, and more. Oregon Tribal and Indian Health Service Clinics Portland Area Indian Health Service - The site can provide primary medical and health care, social services, alcohol and drug counseling, BCCP. Also provides USDA commodity food assistance program and/or free groceries. Serves members of the Paiute Tribe and other federally recognized Tribal members in the community. (541) 573-7312
