The Polk County Salvation Army has a major operation that provides assistance to families in the Winter Haven and Lake Wales areas of Florida. However, the Salvation Army is also running low on funds to distribute to those in need, and is itself in need of help and donations from people if it is going to continue helping those in need.
The Salvation Army helps local people with paying both their rent and utility bills. They also offer a variety of other assistance to those in need. They have a food assistance program available Monday through Friday, they provide disaster services and also collaborate with the Red Cross to manage their assistance programs. The Catholic Charities of Central Florida, which is based in Lakeland but services the entire county, also runs various assistance programs. They offer what is known as an Emergency Assistance Program that provides crisis and emergency services for low income and other clients in need of urgent basic human needs. Some of the resources provided to individuals includes emergency financial assistance for paying bills and housing expenses, referrals, information on Florida and federal government programs, advocacy, food pantry distribution, and in some cases provide short-term case management services to qualified individuals. 863-686-7153. Family Emergency Services of Winter Haven - Programs that provide cash grants and financial assistance for people and families who are unable to pay their utility bills or which offer special services which support people's ability to make their payments. Call (863) 294-1939

Polk County Social Services, which is located in Bartow, runs assistance programs including Polk Health Care Plan and they also offer medical assistance from the Primary care Program. The county may offer limited financial assistance for rent, shelter, utilities, food, and transportation. St. Vincent DePaul - For anyone seeking assistance, the charity has a formal intake process. This will always need to be completed. In addition to that, anyone from Polk County Florida that is applying for financial assistance, a team of volunteers from St. Vincent will perform a home visit with the applicant. This will be done to determine the exact needs of the family or person seeking help.
Society of Saint Vincent can give referrals to state of Florida, federal government, or local resources. Thrift stores and clothing closets offer basic needs including clothes and housing supplies. Vouchers or gift certificates may be provided to the lowest income families in Polk County. They can use those vouchers to pay for needed items. Others may need to pay a minimal cost for their clothing, apply for Christmas assistance, and other support. Additional information.
St. Martin De Porres Ministry - Ex-Offender Services may be able to help people who have been incarcerated in a correctional facility. Receive assistance for free food, paying rent and utilities. Case workers help people transition back to the general community. (941) 778-3858.
Department of Children & Families helps with food stamps. This is a federal government sponsored program administered by Polk County as well. It will assist indigent and low income with obtaining food stamp vouchers to buy groceries at retailers. Call (863) 291-5255.
Agricultural and Labor Program supports migrant and seasonal farm workers. The State of Florida helps over see this. Assistance includes housing counseling, emergency rent payments, transportation, the Head Start program, child care, and other support.
This non-profit serves as the community action agency for the greater Polk County region as well. This means they have information on, referrals, or help for other needs as well. Much of it is offered in partnership with local churches and charities.
ALPI runs a few different job training and education services, including ESL. Other programs include low cost child care, financial aid to pay for a security deposit, LIHEAP utility bill assistance, and rental help. Faith in Action North Lakeland, Inc. offers numerous social services and emergency assistance. It includes everything from loans or cash assistance (for bills or rent) to other services such as transportation for seniors and respite care. Free medical care in Polk County
The uninsured of Polk County Florida can receive access to high quality health and medical care from Lakeland Volunteers In Medicine (LVIM). The non-profit organization is an all volunteer-run medical clinic. The objective of the facility is to provide free, high quality medical and health care to the low income, working uninsured individuals and families who live in Polk County. It is a fairly large and robust organization, as right now LVIM currently has over 400 medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, and lay volunteers who donate their time to providing free health care services.
