Assistance programs in Hillsdale County

Find how to get financial help for paying housing costs (security deposits, rent, or a mortgage); utility bills (water, electric, or heating); or medical bills (dental or prescriptions). There are a number of agencies (churches, charities, and non-profits) that offer emergency help in Hillsdale County. Or they pass out free items, including food, clothing, gasoline vouchers, and other supplies.

The Hillsdale Community Action Agency provides a variety of assistance to local residents. Some of the programs offered include rent help, mortgage and foreclosure relief, and help with paying energy bills. They also help low-income families and the elderly find, and apply for, federal or state benefits.

  • Foreclosure Prevention Counseling is available and it includes free one-on-one counseling for homeowners who are in the midst of financial crises. Community Action may also offer free financial literacy courses as part of the counseling. In rare cases direct financial help, in the form of a grant, is given to help a Hillsdale MI homeowner with their mortgage or property taxes.
     
  • Rent assistance is wide ranging. Participants who receive housing help will receive money (or a voucher) to help paying unpaid utility bills, security deposit, rent arrears or other related costs. The goal is to offer emergency help to stop evictions, or look for other help with an eviction notice in MI.
     
  • In addition, the Hillsdale Community Action Agency also provides landlord tenant mediation services to try to find an option that works for both parties. This can help the landlord and renter find a solution other than eviction.
     
  • People who are transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing will also be able to receive additional rental assistance during that timeframe. This includes HUD funds, or grants, to pay for moving costs or first months rent on a new, affordable apartment.
     
  • Families in Hillsdale can also save on their energy bills from the Weatherization Program, which provides free energy conserving services to low and mid income home owners. Qualified residents of the  may have their homes insulated to save energy, cold air infiltration measures implemented such as caulking, weather-stripping of leaky doors, gaps, and insulating and repairing windows and other minor home repairs.

Hillsdale County Department Human Services (DHS) can provide assistance with a number of housing needs, such as rent, relocation assistance, property taxes, and more. They process applications to government benefit programs for the low-incomer in the region.

  • People living in, or near poverty, can get free government cash from Michigan Family Independence Program (TANF) or SNAP food stamps. There are also daycare vouchers to help parents who are working, applications to Medicaid  government health insurance, and the SER emergency grant program. Salvation Army of Hillsdale - Administers several social services and case management programs. They help the homeless, working poor, seniors and others in Hillsdale County. Among them include emergency rental or utility bill assistance, including vouchers to pay for a hotel. There is also free food, shelter, and Christmas programs too, including gifts for children.

Saint Peter's Episcopal Church runs a health clinic for the low income and uninsured. Services include prescription drug assistance, education, consultation , basic medical care, and more. United Way has many programs in the region. Struggling Hillsdale County families can get free referrals from the non-profits, including to places for financial help, voucher programs, or charities that help pay bills. Free food pantries and grocery assistance programs

El Bethel Pentecostal Church Of God is located in Hillsdale. Telephone (517) 437-3639. The food bank will have items including canned goods and non-perishable food.
