Fremont and Chaffee County assistance program.

Individuals that are struggling, as well as low income families, have options available to them when it comes to paying for their bills and basic needs. Get information on programs available for paying for emergency needs. Churches, non-profits, community action agencies and other locations can all provide financial help for paying expenses, bills, housing, and other costs.

Upper Arkansas Area Council of Governments is located at 3224-A Independence Road, Canon City, Colorado. They are the local community action agency, and one of the resources and organizations they partner with is the Upper Arkansas Area Agency on Aging. Together these two groups provide emergency financial assistance to the low income, and offer other programs for seniors and the elderly. The organizations plan, coordinate and deliver services across the greater Chaffee and Fremont region.

Receive food and groceries from the Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program. Qualified low income families with children and seniors may be eligible for free food, commodities, and perishable items. People can only use this program a few times per year.

Head Start is a preschool and educational preparation program for low-income families in Colorado and across the nation. Children from low income families who range in age from 3 to 5 qualify for this educational and social service program based on their families income, need, and age.

Head Start offers children and their families various support services. Some examples include free food, nutrition, and health care for children. On the other hand, parents can take part in training classes and workshops on many subjects, such as job training, child rearing, information on proper health and nutrition, and using free resources and accessing government programs in your own community. Some parents can take classes to learn to read and improve literacy, or even learn the English language. Head Start in Fremont also offers assistance to parents interested in obtaining adult education opportunities such as a high school General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
