There are many resource, including financial assistance, free stuff including food or grants and more that help low income families in Henderson, McLean, Webster, Hancock, Ohio, and Union County. Low income families can find help for rent or mortgage payments or get funds to pay utility bills. There are free Christmas gifts for low income families as well as dental care and more.

There are financial aid programs that work to stop homelessness or ensure families have food or groceries. Or learn about government grant money, low cost loans, and other benefits. The goal is to help the low income, elderly, and disabled in Owensboro, Webster and McLean County as well as the entire region.

Financial resources for paying bills and providing free basic needs

Audubon Area Community Services is the community action agency for the region. The agency and its staff work diligently to reduce poverty and empower low-income families and the working poor to become self-sufficient.

  • The federal government Low-Income Heating and Energy Assistance Program is for very low income and poor families in the region, including Henderson and Union Counties. It is funded by the federal government by run by the community services group.
     
  • Food pantries can provide groceries, while the Audubon Area Community Emergency Food and Shelter Program can help prevent homeless by assisting with rent or utilities.
     
  • The Educational Scholarship Program assists children and students from low-income individuals with meeting their educational goals. Read more on college scholarships.
     
  • Case management is provided by CHOICES. It will help clients of the non-profit become more self-sufficient by offering financial literacy education, providing job skills and linking clients to other local and regional community resources.

 

 

 

  • The Kentucky Weatherization Assistance Program can help both renters and homeowners reduce their energy costs and save money on utility bills. The focus is on improving both energy conservation and health and safety.
     
  • The Head Start program is offered in almost 20 local counties such as Hancock and Webster. Children will be put into a better place to experience success. It offers educational resources, medical and dental examinations and free nutritious meals. The disabled and immigrants can also enroll in Head Start.

Boulware Mission, Inc. offers a shelter and transitional housing. In addition, the center provides case management type services. This can include life skills instruction, credit repair, money management, and extensive referrals. Hancock County Help offers a number of services and assistance programs that are based on need and household income. The center offers assistance with clothing, food, basic needs and household items. Hancock County Repair Affair is a home modification and repair program for the disabled and senior citizens. The non-profit is based in Lewisport. Volunteers are needed. Telephone number is (270) 927-8448.

 

 

 

 

Salvation Army supports the working poor, elderly, and others in the entire region, including Webster, Ohio and nearby counties. The non-profit offers guidance and counseling. Some basic needs can be met, including clothing, free emergency food, access to a pantry, and emergency financial aid. Case workers also offer youth recreation and character building programs after school and also during the summer. South Hancock Senior Citizens Center provides a full range of social, recreational, educational, and personal programs for seniors and their spouses. (270) 927-8313. More on senior programs in Kentucky.

Henderson Christian Community Outreach offers emergency assistance such as utility bill help, rental assistance, and food or groceries. The agency may also offer dental and prescription medication assistance to the needy too, including the uninsured. They also offer the Gathering Place, which is prescription assistance.

Daniel Pitino Shelter offers short term transitional and emergency housing for qualified individuals and families. People who stay there can also access food programs, medical and dental care, and also free gently used clothing. Dial (270) 688-9000 for information.

SkillTrain helps with employment and job training. The non-profit will provide free academic skill instruction to adults. This can include GED diploma programs, on job-seeking skills and prepare clients in Ohio County Kentucky to enter post-secondary education and/or training to prepare for employment. (270) 686-4447

Clothe-A-Kid runs a Christmas assistance programs. The aid is for students who are from low income and struggling families. Clients can get gloves, a coat, hat, underwear, socks and one to two outfits. 511 South Mart Street, Morganfield, Kentucky, 42437. Call (270) 389-3929.

Henderson Salvation Army offers low income assistance programs. The needy can access services including counseling and guidance from case managers. In addition, the non-profit can provide emergency food, clothing, and more. 1213 Washington Street, Henderson, Kentucky 42420. Dial (270) 826-4472.

United Family Services of Clay Kentucky does administer some emergency assistance. This can be paid out for expenses such as housing costs, food, electric and cooling bills and more. Non-perishable food and baby formula may be distributed too. Telephone number is (270) 333-5995.

Regional food banks, free groceries and pantries

Senior Services – Meals on Wheels of Ohio County, phone (270) 298-4460, will offer low cost, nutritional meals to home bound senior citizens across the county and city of Hartford.

Union County Happy Pack, Inc. is for children and students from the local schools. The center runs a feeding program for those who who have little or no food available to them. It takes care of weekend and holiday needs. UC Senior Services – Meals on Wheels helps senior citizens. The location offers nutritious meals for home bound and congregate clients. Other help from the elderly in counties such Union on McLean includes health information, recreation, counseling, crime prevention education, and friendly home visits. The office is in Morganfield.
