The federal government U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, works with New York to provide the Section 8 rent subsidies to very low income residents, the elderly, and disabled among others. The Public Housing Authorities across the state provide information, accept applications (even online), and administer the program at the town, county, or city level. They will also manage the waiting lists that are usually in place.

Qualified low income families (or single people) can get housing assistance in the form of rent vouchers from the Section 8 Program. It works by partnering with owners of existing housing units, apartment communities and private landlords across New York. The landlord needs to agree to accept the section 8 housing voucher as a form of payment.

The goal of the New York Section 8 housing choice voucher program is it helps make homes and apartments more affordable for the low income or those in poverty who need help. It helps reduce homelessness and can make safe and affordable houses available to the public. But the supply is high and units are limited, which leads to a waiting list (get details online). The total amount of rent, including energy bills, that someone needs to pay is usually at most 30% of their total household’s.

The other option, the New York emergency Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher service is the federal government’s primary program for assisting seniors, very low-income families with medical needs, and the disabled with their housing needs. Local housing authorities can provide applications to that as well.
