Help with rent in Westchester County.

There are several places to call for rent assistance in Westchester County New York, including the towns of White Plains, New Rochelle, and Yonkers. Various non-profits , churches, government agencies, and charities offer either funds for security deposits, referrals, or one time, emergency rent assistance.

Unfortunately most of the programs have limited funding and/or waiting lists, especially Section 8 housing choice vouchers as well as rent subsidized housing. The best approach is to call multiple agencies in Westchester County to ask for their rental and housing assistance programs. Or inquire into any homeless prevention and rapid rehousing services they offer or loans that may help pay back rent.

In addition, the earlier you call for help the better. Do not wait until your have an eviction notice from your landlord, as by then it is too late. The leading non-profits to call for help paying rent in Westchester County, White Plains, and New Rochelle are listed below.

A leading non-profit organization, the New Rochelle Community Action Program/Agency offers assistance on housing and rental matters. While many low income families can get help, a focus is on assisting veterans who are struggling with paying their rent. Section 8 housing vouchers as well as rent subsidized homes or apartment are offered. They are for very low income families, the disabled, elderly or people living in poverty. Salvation Army, offers financial assistance for paying rent. There are a few locations in Westchester County. The Salvation Army can also provide access to a thrift store, homeless shelter, clothing, furniture for an apartment and other aid. They also have shelters in Westchester for the homeless. Westchester County Department of Planning may offer assistance to tenants with medical issues only. The office is 148 Martine Avenue. There may be government grants for rent as part of HOWPA, energy bill assistance, placement into support housing and more. The office is in White Plains, NY 10601. New Rochelle Department of Development - Get emergency eviction prevention and rent payment assistance from the federal government funded Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. Eviction and Homeless Prevention - The first part of the process is mediation with a landlord. There may also be some cash grants for security deposits, back rent, shelters for the homeless, warming centers and other resources. The Homeless Prevention programs also helps with mortgage needs.

In some cases, families with a crisis may receive a cash grant as a form of emergency rental assistance. it is combined with case management. United Community Center of Westchester and New Rochelle
They have information on low income and public housing, but provide other services in order to stop evictions. This can include referrals to loans for paying rent, case management, help with moving, and mediation for housing issues. Call 914-813-2896.

Preservation Company - Staff work to ensure the low income, including veterans or single parents, have access to safe and affordable housing. They partner with housing authorities and government organizations. The address is 1037 Main Street, Peekskill , New York 10566. Call 914-734-8928.

The Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS) also runs the government funded Rental Assistance Program (RAP). A non-profit agency known as Westhab administers the program, and it provides partial government funded rent subsidies for working families facing an eviction and who are homeless. Another agency also runs the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP) in the Westchester County region, and that agency is also Westhab.
