Assistance from the Salvation Army in Tennessee.

The Tennessee Salvation Army tries to offer help and hope to families that are faced with a crisis or emergency situation. A number of assistance programs and resources are offered by the centers below in order to assist people through a difficult period.

Case managers and social workers administer services including assistance for utility bills, housing, food, rent and vouchers for items such as clothing or maybe even gasoline. The Salvation Army in Tennessee also gives out free back to school backpacks or supplies, sells goods from thrift stores, and helps the low income during the holidays with free Christmas gifts or meals, including at Thanksgiving.

Many of the resources offered by the Salvation Army in Tennessee are intended to prevent homelessness and also help people gain self-sufficiency. So this assistance is focused around rent, energy assistance, and employment services. To give an example to show the extent as well as number of people who receive support on an annual basis, the local TN centers support hundreds of thousands of individuals with food,  money for paying utilities, and free clothes or furniture.

Emergency programs in Tennessee

Many centers in Tennessee offer a resource known as the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, which addresses housing and shelter needs. Most of the financial aid available from this resource is focused on people who were evicted or that are currently homeless. There may also be information on how to apply for rent help.

The non-profit will network with other agencies, government programs and community services as well. Clients will be offered assistance and advice with setting personal goals, job referrals, help people obtain and pay for housing or back rent, and much more.

Various other social services are offered too. The Salvation Army Center of Hope Staff provides baby supplies, energy assistance, Emergency Food Orders, clothing, and hygiene products. All of this aid is only offered as funds allow. Families who can prove their need and who are low income may qualify. Some help can even be offered for stranded travelers with fuel and discounted bus tickets. If the local Salvation Army center in Tennessee can’t meet your need, they can offer referrals to other agencies for these and other needs.

Many of the Salvation Army centers in Tennessee also operate food pantries. They will be open limited hours (and clients should call in advance), but when they are stocked, groceries, dairy, fruits, and more may be passed out. Many other hunger prevention programs also operate in partnership with the Salvation Army, and find more free food banks in Tennessee.

The Salvation Army has both Family (Thrift Stores) across Tennessee as well as free giveaways and supplies. Of course the Family Stores are open to anyone. People can volunteer; anyone can donate clothes, electronics, beds, couches, car seats, vintage items or anything; and families can shop there. When it comes to the free goods, those are income based and also depend on availability. As an example, find charities that give free car seats to new parents.

Tennessee Salvation Army seasonal programs

Holiday assistance is offered from the Angel Tree, Red Kettle and other programs. For example, each Christmas thousands of families and children get presents and gifts through the Angel Tree Program. New children's clothing, coats, Christmas Food Baskets, and new toys are just some examples of support and resources that are available through donations and the Angel Tree Program to area families. Thousands of both seniors and children receive holiday food baskets and Christmas stockings.

Other holiday assistance includes Thanksgiving Day meals, which are served at the Salvation Army's Centers across the state, and volunteers may deliver meals to seniors and the homebound as well. Easter baskets are also offered during the spring.

Assistance may be offered to school aged children. Donations of new school supplies such as books, pencils, and other items are solicited during the summer months. Then distribution of these items will occur to thousands of local children from low-income families. Most aid is provided in the early part of August to help people with their back to school needs.
