Blount County and Maryville Salvation Army assistance programs.

Often serving as a last resort for the low income and working poor, the Blount County Salvation Army is a leading, faith based Christian church in the area. In an effort to address shelter, medical, nutritional, and employment needs, the charity may offer everything from food to gasoline vouchers for “go getters” and more. Even when they can't offer financial or material support, the social workers still try to end the cycle of poverty in Blount County by stressing employment.

Emergency financial help from Salvation Army in Maryville

When funding is available, qualified applicants may apply for emergency financial aid. The Blount County Salvation Army Center in Maryville will require applicants to participate in case management. This includes everything such as tenant responsibility classes to money management workshops, credit counseling and similar classes. When all of this has been done, (and sustained) then some financial support may be given such as the following.

Homeless prevention is intended to keep a roof over each resident's head and ensure they have shelter. This category includes everything from one time rent or utility bill help to referrals to legal aid. This form of homeless assistance is available to keep people from losing their home or apartment and needed to live in a local shelter. Find other sources of help with back rent expenses.

As part of this, Transitional and Permanent Supportive Housing is for at-risk families. The Salvation Army in Maryville realizes not everyone can afford their rent, so they need to be more acclimated. So combining financial aid and goals in parenting, education and budgeting, this can help the chronically evicted and/or homeless.

Blount County Salvation Army social services and referrals

Blount County Salvation Army always stresses self-sufficiency and ending the reliance on charitable or government aid. This is where there case management services are stressed. The agency will try to help people over come those barriers too. So if a client needs advice on what workshops to sign up for, advice may be given. Transportation, such as gasoline vouchers to make it to the job for a few days, may be arranged. There are also vouchers for work clothing at the thrift store.

There are other resources arranged in Blount County by the Salvation Army, such as disaster relief as well as support for victims of women fleeing from domestic violence, the homebound, and others. Salvation Army officers and the various volunteers meet needs by providing shelter, clothing, food, water and spiritual comfort. If there is an emergency medical need to be met, this can be covered too.

Free seasonal programs, food, and basic needs

In partnership with local churches, charities, businesses, and even hospitals, the Salvation Army free Christmas and Thanksgiving programs help low income families with children as well as senior citizens. Donations from the community of food, clothes, and toys are provided.

Also, during the fall/winter months, the Red Kettle campaign and its bell ringers from across Blount County are in operation. They collect money from the community which is used to pay for the Salvation Army social services, including the Christmas programs. There are also free back to school supply giveaways for students from K to 12, in which backpacks, shoes, clothes and more are passed out.

Volunteers are always needed. They can cook meals, deliver them to the homebound and senior citizens, ring the Red Bell, and more. They can also go collect goods, such as toys as part of Angel Tree, to give the presents out to kids.

The working poor, homeless, and low income can get free meals from the soup kitchen and/or groceries from the food pantry. There may be some of the following from the Blount County Salvation Army.

  • The homeless or hungry can get a free hot breakfast or lunch, which may be eggs, coffee, bread, pastries, and more.
  • A free food bank can be used a few times per year, and this will give out a few day supply of groceries.

Other free items may be given out too. The very low income often struggle to obtain everything from clothes to diapers, bedding, and the like. So not only can they shop at the Maryville Salvation Army thrift store, but in some cases free vouchers are given to provide these goods. If it is school supplies, clothes for work, or furniture to rebuild after a disaster, aid is given. Find a free thrift store near you.

As with all of the Salvation Army programs, volunteers and businesses keep these food as well as clothing programs running. They work at the pantry, serve meals, and offer outreach to the homeless. They clean the clothes and package them to give out to others.
