Local state and community free car programs

Programs that may provide qualified people with a free car are usually operated at the local level. These programs, while not common, are run by nonprofit organizations, workforce agencies, and local community organizations. When available, most of the vehicle assistance programs require that the free or low-cost car be used for employment reasons, job training, educational needs or other economic stability reasons. Below is a list of state-specific organizations that offer free cars, very low-cost vehicles or referrals. Each program operates independently, and rules vary by location.

The availability depends on donated vehicles in the area, funding from an agency, dealership giveaway events, and local eligibility rules. In some cases, organizations may provide emergency money to pay for vehicle repairs or a grant to pay for transportation instead of giving away a car. Whether assistance comes in the form of a refurbished, donated vehicle given away to a local qualified applicant or financial support to address the need for a reliable vehicle, the goal is the same, which is helping households maintain reliable transportation so they can work and either obtain or remain self-sufficient.

Always be aware of important eligibility notes - and be mindful of scams or frauds as documented in our guide. No legitimate program will ever charge for applications. That being said, local vehicle programs often require proof of income, employment or job readiness, residency, and many will also require referral from a caseworker or nonprofit partner. The fact is any vehicle, whether new or used, is costly so resources are limited and often demand far outstrips supply. Waiting lists are common, and many programs assist only residents of a specific city, county or service area.

C.A.R.S. Ministry (Christian Automobile Repair Service) has several parishes around the country.
