Free cars in Virginia for low-income families.

Several non-profit organizations, charities and government programs will provide a free car to qualified low-income families in Virginia. In general, the vehicle will be provided for employment needs – such as a new job, interview, or to replace a broken vehicle. Find where to get a free can near you in Virginia.

Many of the programs focus on a certain part of the state. This means that a free car or even truck is for people in the immediate area. Non-profits such as Free Charity Cars, Northern Virginia Family Services and others help low-income families, veterans and others can some form of free or low-cost transportation for their needs.

Free car programs in Northern Virginia

Cars Changing Lives covers several counties, including Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren Counties. The non-profit takes in donated vehicles from the community, repairs them, and then gives the auto away to qualified people who need it for economic stability reasons. Applicants need to use the car for work, a job interview, childcare or other reasons.

Other forms of transportation help are provided too. Cars Changing Lives will offer free or very low-cost repairs, process monetary donations that will help people pay for a used vehicle (in effect being free) and more. Northern Virginia Family Service has a number of assistance programs, including transportation services, free or low-cost vehicles for a job, and more. The non-profit covers several parts of northern Virginia, including Fairfax, Arlington, Loudoun and Prince William Counties. In addition to providing qualified low-income families a free car  or transportation, there are also funds to fix the vehicle and other grant based services. Other regional community action organizations and charities, often in partnership with the government or local auto dealers, give away vehicles from time to time. Free cars or help obtaining one will be provided by the following.

  • Action in the Community Through Service (ACTS) is a non-profit at 9317 Grant Ave, Manassas, VA 20110. Loans, grants, funds to pay for a car or repair from Ways or Wheels to Work and more is offered. The organization supports the Prince William area. Phone 888-392-8278 or (703) 368 4141

  • ECDC Enterprise Development Group. The non-profit gives local rides and help with cars or truck acquisitions from 901 S. Highland St., Arlington, VA. 22204, dial 703-685-0510
  • Serve (Securing Emergency Resources Through Voluntary Efforts) has emergency programs for the low-income, including cars, transportation and financial help. The charity is at 15 Upton Lane, Stafford, VA 22554. Call 540-288-9603.

Free cars and trucks across state of VA

Vehicles for Change operates in many parts of the state. A free car, truck, or even motorcycle may be given away, however in most cases the vehicle will be sold at a very low cost and come with a minimal payment. Some people that use the VFC program in Virginia may have the fees or costs waived if they make payments on time, and others may be given a used car for as little as a thousand dollars or so.

This means the programs that help with transportation from the Vehicles for Change network are wide ranging. The non-profit tries to do its best to give an affordable or sometimes free car (if needed) based on the applicant income, credit history and other factors. Mechanics of FAITH focuses on fixing a car for free, but they also help people find free car giveaways, auto dealership foundations that give away vehicles and arrange other support. The FAITH based group is based in central Virginia (Richmond area), but they provide referrals to people across the state and even country. Veterans in Virginia can get referrals to help, including a free vehicle from MFAN, or Military Family Advisory Network. They operate across the state and nation, but are based in Arlington Virginia. The organization provides information on a wide variety of services that can help veterans as well as their families. One of them will be information on transportation programs, including free cars, repairs to a vehicle and more. Free Charity Cars, or FCC, while they operate nationwide, one branch focuses on the Chesapeake Virginia area and others is in western part of the state in Roanoke.  The non-profit helps people with little or no money, but they need a car or truck for work, get a vehicle. In effect anyone across the state of VA, or nation, can donate a car or truck to FCC and the vehicle will then be given to a qualified family. Salvation Army free car programs will help a subset of the population, as the Christian faith based charity offers numerous assistance programs in Virginia. Whether a free bus pass, volunteers that give a ride, free or low cost vehicles (or repairs), a wide variety of help is offered. The Salvation Army free car programs are offered, as resources allow and contact a location near you.

Free cars and vehicles in central Virginia

Wheels to Work from Monticello Area Community Action Agency in Virginia provides reliable used vehicles for free to its clients. The main beneficiaries are usually former moms on cash assistance who are currently working or attending job training. Wheels to Work serves the counties of Albemarle, Nelson, Fluvanna and Louisa and also the city of Charlottesville in partnership with the Monticello Area Community Action Agency. Capital Area Partnership Uplifting People (CAPUP) has transportation programs at 1021 Oliver Hill Way, Richmond, VA 23219. They are the regional community action agency that has grant money, hardship funds and other support for people working towards self-sufficiency, and help with a car or transportation is offered.
