Free Car Programs in South Carolina

For many residents, especially those in rural South Carolina or suburban communities, a reliable vehicle is the only way to reach a job, transport children to school, or even access medical care. For low-income families and those transitioning into the workforce, the lack of transportation is often the single greatest barrier to financial independence. In an effort to help, several non-profit organizations and faith-based groups (as listed below) across South Carolina operate vehicle donation and repair programs.

These programs primarily rely on refurbished cars or trucks donated by the community, which are then provided to qualified individuals for work or other essential needs. In addition to vehicle donations, some programs focus on providing free or low-cost auto repairs, which can be equivalent to a free car by returning an existing vehicle to safe, drivable condition. Pro tip: Most of these programs (especially ACTS and ASA) prioritize clients referred by 2-1-1 or a local case manager.

Columbia and Midlands Area Free Car Programs

The Cooperative Ministry
The Cooperative Ministry focuses on long-term self-sufficiency for residents in the Midlands. Their Community Auto Repository (CAR) program repairs donated vehicles and aims to provide them to low-income, employed individuals who need transportation to keep their jobs. Most vehicles, as resources allow, are free or have a minimal administrative fee.

  • The program is integrated with budgeting assistance and career counseling to help recipients maintain their vehicles and manage ownership costs. The location is 3821 West Beltline Boulevard, Columbia, SC 29204. Call (803) 799-3853 or learn more at https://www.coopmin.org/. The charity also provide other types of help as well, with details at Cooperative Ministry assistance programs.
