Low-income families, single parents and the disabled as well as seniors are a focus too. Many different emergency programs and case management services are provided by Volunteers of America in Western Washington. Much of the coordination is done from their Sky Valley Resource Center, and the non-profit help low income families, veterans, seniors, and the disabled in the region. VOA will provide services in the counties of King, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom Counties.

The Western Washington Volunteers of America (VOA) Sky Valley Resource Center offers an array of services, assistance programs and resources. They will provide lower income or struggling Skykomish Valley residents with referrals and connections to any type of assistance or support they may need.
While the staff and volunteers do the best they can, it is all too often that community needs exceed the charity organizations resources. So not everyone will be able to find help. - Young people, single moms, and youth can get help from the center. Services include Preschool and Pre-Head Start Classes as well as a free school Backpack Day. Or get referrals to affordable child care, Holiday Giving Tree and other programs.
- There is also assistance for the elderly at the Volunteers of America Western Washington Sky Valley Senior Center. They can use the facilities in an effort to remain connected to the community. This also includes information on senior centers in the community.
Emergency services, including financial support, may be provided to the general public, provided they qualify. All of this is depending on the availability of funding. Clients can receive funds for some or all of the following.
- Transportation - This includes free Gasoline Vouchers or Bus Tickets for travel in counties such as King or Snohomish.
- Housing - Loans may be issued for paying security deposits or there may be funds for mortgage, utility bills or rent assistance. There are a number of other resources too, and locate places for emergency rent assistance in WA.
- Medical needs - Mobile Dental Van, Prescription Vouchers, and more is offered by VOA of Western Washington partners.
The Everett Food Bank distributes a few days worth of supplemental groceries or food to Everett Washington area families. There are also items offered for seniors, children and individuals with disabilities. The VOA of Western Washington partners with the pantry and local companies to help keep the pantry stocked.
The VOA in Western Washington works to help with housing needs. Homelessness Prevention and Housing and Transitional Services Programs offer a range of services to those that qualify, with an emphasis on preventing homelessness. This is in addition to the Emergency Services referenced above. The resources will help clients avoid family disruption, stress, and anxiety and also save the general community funds.
Western Washington VOA will focus on addressing and resolving the causes of each family's situation, with the ultimate goal of achieving permanent housing and self-sufficiency. To that end, the non-profit offers cash assistance with rent payments, loans for security deposits, and rapid re-housing services.
For those from the region who are evicted and do become homeless, they can provide up to 90 days of emergency shelter. However the goal is always to prevent homeless from occurring in the first place. There are also transitional housing facilities and individualized case management offered to clients.
Free budgeting, debt relief and financial literacy programs
Promoting self-sufficiency is one of VOA's overriding goals. Some of the tools to make this happen include Life Skills Education courses and workshops. These classes will help clients to fulfill this goal. Case managers are assisting community residents with managing their households, both gaining and keeping steady employment, and reaching their full potential.

The disabled can access self-sufficiency and other assistance from the VOA Supported Living Program. It is committed to supporting the population by providing efficient and effective services to enable them to remain in their own apartments and homes. Volunteers and staff will help them enjoy the best possible quality of life.
There is also help for caregivers. The Volunteers of America help clients access government programs including from Medicaid. Caregiver assistance is provided in Seattle, Snohomish and nearby counties so that people can care for elderly or vulnerable family members. The Volunteers of America ECEAP Preschools are used to ensure that children are well-prepared and ready to learn when they attend school. Considering that some studies show that over half of students are not prepared for school, it is a concern.
Volunteers of America Western Washington preschool curriculum is taught by experienced and highly educated staff members who work to make learning both dynamic and engaging. There are also social services available for the child's parents as well.
For lower income or uninsured people without dental insurance coverage, the Dental Van is a welcome sight. It travels across western Washington, including Skagit, Snohomish King and Whatcom counties. The stops at the Sky Valley Resource Center occur regularly, but not often, so people line up to take advantage. The Dental Van is sponsored by a coalition of non-profit organizations and charities. They work with VOA of Western Washington to provide mobile care.
