San Miguel County Salvation Army assistance programs.

Most of the emergency assistance from the San Miguel County Salvation Army is provided as part of their Family Services program. This will put a focus on supporting families or individuals that are in a short term financial crisis. If a family from the Las Vegas New Mexico region is in long term poverty or homeless, then a combination of referrals and/or emergrncy shelters may be available along with a hot meal.

Another focus of the charity is to support migrant farm workers as well as immigrants. With an increasing number of temporary workers as well as people passing through the San Miguel County, many of them need guidance on where to turn to to get acclimated. The Salvation Army social workers may offer this support.

There are programs that can help feed families, including the working poor. Or if the person is living by themselves, or even homeless, they to can get a meal. There are a few main resources used to address hunger in the San Miguel County area.

Short term, emergency meals can be obtained at the soup kitchen. This is a Salvation Army service that offers breakfast, lunch, or hot dinner depending on the time of the year. While some clients may be homeless, others drop in for a meal as maybe their paycheck was short that week or they just don't want to eat alone. The Salvation Army San Miguel soup kitchen combines meals and counseling.

Mid term support is available from the food pantry. When the shelves are stocked, the Las Vegas New Mexico center can provide canned goods such as fruits, pasta, or canned meat. While less common, during some times of the year fruits or vegetables may be provided as well.

San Miguel County Salvation Army social services/financial help is limited, but it may be an option. This too will focus on addressing a crisis, so any aid is short term and requires the applicant to get back on track with paying their own bills the following month. What may be available is as follows.

Vulnerable households facing a shut off of their power, or that need to keep their house warm in the winter or cold during the summer, may receive utility bill assistance. When a home has an older occupant or young child, they may be more likely to get financial help if they show the ability to pay future bills on their own. Those Salvation Army clients may be most at risk if their electricity were to be shut off.

San Miguel County homeless prevention is another goal. This combined emergency funds for rent with placement into shelters to get a family off the street. The Salvation Army Family Service department will try to help those from the community that may be facing homelessness. When apply, bring a copy of the lease agreement, proof of income as well as ID, copies of pay stubs, and applicants need birth certificates as well.

The Salvation Army thrift store is under high usage in the county. This is one of the main ways the charity raises money from the San Miguel County. So not only do they fund the Family Services from the store, but it provides shoppers a tremendous discount on what they need. Whether it is clothing for work or school, furniture, or a Christmas toy for their child, the store may have it. Shoppers also give back to the community by shopping there.

Working closely with the store is the Christmas assistance service in San Miguel County. This is part of Angel Tree, and families may be given a free meal from the Salvation Army and their kid given a toy. Sharing the joy of the holidays is always a goal.

Other than the thrift store, the vast majority of the social services from the Las Vegas New Mexico site are offered one time only. As funding allows, money may be provided for an emergency and then the case worker directs the client to other, longer-term programs such as SNAP food stamps.

All of the support is to address a crisis will strengthening strengthening the client at the same time. Whether it is unemployment or a medical crisis, the Salvation Army at 717 Douglas Ave, Las Vegas, New Mexico, 87701 may be able to assist. The phone number is (505) 425-1591.
