Financial assistance from Alabama Salvation Army.
Emergency financial assistance is provided by the Salvation Army in Alabama. The non-profit charity organization can provide limited amounts of cash assistance to pay bills and basic needs. However the Salvation Army (with locations listed below) is also very effective at offering case management, referrals, and non-monetary assistance to the low income and people who are faced with a crisis in Alabama.
Housing and rent assistance can be provided by a number of Homeless Intervention and Prevention Programs. Both financial assistance and counseling can be made available to help prevent the displacement of Alabama families and individuals from their homes as a result of foreclosure or eviction. Case managers can assist homeless individuals and families in securing permanent housing, and also provide an education, job finding services as well as training component to secure self-sufficiency over the mid to long term.
Usually, in order to be qualified for emergency rent or housing help from the Alabama Salvation Army, applicants need to meet one or more of the following. A key being the individual needs to be in a temporary financial hardship or crisis due to no fault of their own.
- For example, an applicant needs to have been faced with an illness, accident, medical condition at work, job layoff, loss of daycare, reduction in hours and income or loss of transportation.
- The person must have been self-sufficient before the emergency and for the most part have been current with their rent or mortgage payment. They need to prove they can get back on track with paying their housing costs in the near future.
- Alabama families must be in imminent danger of losing their home or apartment through foreclosure or eviction.
Aid is only offered for lower income individuals. Therefore the applicant's total family income needs to meet certain low income limits that may be in place in your area. Your monthly rent or mortgage payments needs to meet certain government guidelines for low income. For more information, find eviction help in Alabama.
Financial assistance and grants are provided as a last resort. So the applicant needs to have used up all other sources of government assistance and resources, including social services, other state of Alabama assistance programs, and they must have applied for any financial aid or support from area churches and charities.
If you meet these and possibly other conditions and if the centers happen to have funding then cash and financial assistance shall be paid directly to the mortgage company or landlord on behalf of the applicant. Some assistance may be paid out in the form of a low interest loan, and some may be paid as cash grant, which means you do not need to repay the Salvation Army. Security deposit assistance may also be provided by the Salvation Army.
Food banks and emergency food closets are offered at many locations. Non-perishable food items, groceries, and other aid (such as clothing or household goods) are stored in the Emergency Services office or pantry which is available at most Alabama Salvation Army centers.
Easter, Thanksgiving, and Holiday meals and gifts can be provided around their respective times of the year. The Salvation Army in Alabama really provides these holiday programs for kids, as they do not want children to go without during the holidays. Help around the holidays can come from programs such as Angel tree, warm holiday meals or emergency food boxes, and much more. Even items such as free winter coats may be offered too.
Continuing education and job finding programs – Social workers are involved in coordinating services for individuals in need of job training as well as computer software training through various partners and local job centers.

Assistance with energy bills, including cooling, heating, water, and electric. This is focused on people who are faced with a disconnection of their service. Financial aid can help pay the bills of an Alabama family who is faced with a crisis situation.
Medical care – While not nearly as common, some branches may have vouchers for medications or be able to offer basic health care. If a center can’t meet your needs, they can often refer individuals to free community clinics or dental centers in Alabama.
