United Community Corporation emergency assistance programs.

When facing a crisis, or for those Newark residents needing help with basic needs, they can turn to the United Community Corporation. The non-profit agency offers various services to needy families, the unemployed, and elderly. They administer low income housing, a resource center, food, day care, and much more. Some of the main assistance programs from the organization, which is also known as UCC and serves as a community action agency in Newark, are noted below.

Employment, referrals and outreach from UCC

The Resource Center provides information and referrals to a number of needs. Clients can access details on housing and medical bill assistance. There is a free lab available to individuals or families from the region in need of internet or computer access. The center can help those from the community learn about benefits such as SNAP food stamps, loan programs, or emergency rental assistance programs in the county. Or some qualified low income families, in particular those with kids, can find how to get a free laptop computer. Call (973) 642-0181.

Employment needs can be met too. A focus is on training for Software Applications and Basic Computer Skills. Classes are taught and workshops are held by certified instructors. The United Community Corporation community action agency offers training opportunities for working poor and low income residents from the city and Essex County. After the training is done, free job placement assistance will be offered to successful students.

United Community Corporation, and its partners in Newark, help families deal with debts. Most of the assistance is free. Clients can learn about consolidating their bills, reducing interest rates, and taking other steps to improve their overall financial situation. As one example, find about abouts such as debt arbitration.

Financial help, free food and other assistance from United Community Corporation

Low-Income Apartment and Housing from the United Community Village Development is available. There are units in the city, including town homes and condos. Rent will be due from families, based on a portion of their total household income. Call (973) 621-5441 for information on this as well as funds to help pay for moving costs or security deposits.

A UCC Food Pantry offers free groceries, canned goods, paper products, and similar items. The food assistance program helps struggling individuals and families from Newark in need keep some type of meal or food on their tables. It is very limited and can only be used a couple times per year.

Often combined with above is the Clothes Closet. Community residents that meet low income levels that are in need of free or gently used clothing can visit the free UCC Clothes Closet. The location will provide them with work, school, or maybe even everyday type donated clothing. There may also be some items offered from Christmas and other holidays.

A shelter is open for the homeless. This is a form of very short term, temporary housing. In addition to a place to stay, guests can get a meal, counseling, referrals to employment programs and health care referral services. All of this, and more, is offered during their stay at the center. For those on the verge of homelessness, there may be information to other Essex based rental assistance programs. (973) 642-0181

Medical and Health Care needs can be addressed by United Community Corporation. This is for low income or uninsured looking for health or dental care assistance. Too many people in Newark as well as Essex County struggle with their medical bills, so UCC helps where they can. Screenings, check ups, seminars and workshops are all offered at local centers and clinics throughout the year. Call (973) 642-0181, or learn about other support including uninsured health care assistance in New Jersey.

There is outreach for youth and seniors in the county too. UCC has a series of programs and activities for seniors and there are also some for targeting at-risk-youth. Assistance programs consist of health screenings, group outings, financial literacy workshops, educational resources, meals seminars and more.

Both daycare and child care is available. There are After School and Daycare Center Programs that offer adequate year round after school and daycare care services for families in need of childcare assistance. Certified staff provide an educational, safe and friendly environment for enrollees up to age 16. Some minimal fees may be due, but government vouchers can often be used to pay for costs as well. Telephone (973) 621-5666.
