Free eye care and prescription glasses in Texas.

There are several places to turn to for free or affordable eye care in the state of Texas. Residents can find support from statewide programs, charity clinics, and foundations. Access to vision care is essential for seniors, children, working parents, and uninsured households. Find details below on where to get help in Texas with eyecare needs, including new glasses, exams and other care.

Government programs in Texas that help pay for eyecare

School-based programs remain an important access point. They combine government and charitable resources with eyewear donated from companies, wellness checks, vision exams and more.

Texas Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a government benefit for teens / kids, even those from moderate income households in TX. CHIP cover eye exams and glasses for eligible children, and medically necessary eye exams for adults in some circumstances. Note while most of the aid is for younger people, in some cases adults / single parents can get help too. Program details and enrollment are at https://www.texas.gov/health-services/

  • Vision To Learn in Dallas helps lower income Dallas ISD students with on-site exams and free glasses through mobile clinics, with support from national partners. A number of optometrists, eye doctors and others also volunteer to help kids get the vision care they need - for free. Program highlights and Texas updates are posted at https://visiontolearn.org/texas/.
  • In Houston, the See to Succeed program provides free exams and eyeglasses to eligible students in participating districts. Families and school staff can contact 832-393-5088 or see details at https://houstonhealthfoundation.org/brilliant-futures/see-to-succeed/.

Clinics and non-profits that help Texas residents with eye exams or give free classes / contacts

Many vision clinics still operate on a local basis, and they continue to serve low-income families, immigrants, and people without insurance or maybe their policy does not pay for eye care costs. Families should expect a complete visit when getting their eyecare needs met. This includes intake, a formal vision exam, and a discussion of current needs. Many centers also provide services in Spanish and languages other than English. If an exam suggests a serious medical issue, staff members refer patients to ophthalmology partners or a nearby hospital for treatment.

When glasses or contacts are prescribed, most locations provide discounted options and, when donations allow, free eyewear. Availability depends on community support and partners, including manufacturers and retailers. A major factor is donations from the community as well as retailers such as LensCrafters or Wal-Mart. While free glasses are not guaranteed, many Texans do receive them each year through school-based events, the Lions Clue eyewear programs and charitable clinics.

There will also tend to be discounted vision supplies available too. For contact lens wearers, they may find cleaning solutions available at a more affordable price. Or other goods that may be sold include eyeglass repair kits or cases. There may also be discounted prescription sunglasses for clients with a medical need. So the centers try to offer a wide array of comprehensive eye care items.

Prevent Blindness Texas helps with free screenings and referrals to vision clinics and financial assistance partners. There is free vision care for both adults and kids. More information and screening locations are at https://texas.preventblindness.org.

Mission Cataract Texas and participating surgeons perform free cataract surgery each year for uninsured patients with medical need. Program information, timing, and participating clinics vary and are listed at https://missioncataractusa.org.

The primary eye focused charitable clinics to try are below. As noted, referrals may also be given to additional locations. In addition, many community clinics may also perform free, basic eye exams for the uninsured or families living in poverty. More on Texas free health care clinics.
