Miami-Dade County Free School Supply Giveaways and Back to School Events

Most Miami-Dade County Public Schools require uniforms, which means back-to-school spending here goes well beyond the usual backpack and notebook list. A polo shirt, dress pants, and new sneakers can cost a family more than the supplies themselves. The programs listed here account for that — several of the larger events include uniforms, shoes, and full outfits, not just pencils and folders.

This page will help residents navigate options for the back to school supply season. The window is also compressed. MDCPS schools typically start in mid-August, which means the July-through-August back-to-school season moves fast. The biggest events fill their registration slots weeks in advance. If you wait until school is a week away, most supplies will already be gone. Pre-registration is required at most major events, and some are capped well before the doors open.

Bilingual services are standard across most of the programs below. Spanish-language staff are the norm. Several events also serve Haitian Creole-speaking families. If you need free clothes year round, see the free clothing closets in Miami Dade County page.

The Largest Annual Events — Open to All Miami-Dade Families

Style Saves — Miami Beach Convention Center
Style Saves is unlike any other back-to-school event in South Florida. Rather than rows of tables with supplies to grab, the annual event at the Miami Beach Convention Center is designed like a department store: families walk through the space and select from racks of uniforms, shelves of sneakers, backpacks, and school supplies — all at no cost. The event is a full weekend, with haircuts, food trucks, live music, and family activities running alongside the shopping.

The uniform focus is the most important distinction here. Most large back-to-school giveaways in the county cover supplies; Style Saves also covers the polo shirts, pants, and sneakers that MDCPS uniform policies require. Pre-registration at stylesaves.org is required and slots fill up. Past events have been held on a weekend in early August at 1901 Convention Center Dr., Miami Beach. This is a high-demand event; register as early as mid-summer when slots open. Website is https://www.stylesaves.org/.

The Children's Trust Family Expo
The Children's Trust is a voter-funded Miami-Dade County institution that invests more than $250 million annually into programs for children and families. Each summer, it hosts what it describes as the largest free family resource fair in the county. In past years, thousands of backpacks and school supplies have been distributed at the event, alongside dozens of exhibitors connecting families to after-school programs, health screenings, and other services. Free back-to-school vaccinations through a UHealth Jackson mobile unit have been a regular feature.

The expo has been held at various Miami-Dade locations in past years, including Florida Memorial University in Miami Gardens and Miami Dade College Kendall Campus. Location and format have varied from year to year. Check https://www.thechildrenstrust.org/ each summer for current details. The event is free and open to all Miami-Dade families — no income verification required to attend. Verify location and date before making the trip, as both have shifted between years.

Amigos for Kids — Blue Backpack Project
One of the longest-running back-to-school programs in South Florida, Amigos for Kids has been distributing backpacks and supplies to children in Miami-Dade's most under-resourced communities for over three decades. The organization is rooted in Little Havana and works through a network of partner schools, community organizations, and government agencies — reaching families who may not have transportation or access to larger public events.

The Blue Backpack Project distributes pre-filled, grade-appropriate backpacks to pre-registered children. Children must be present with a parent or caregiver. Events have typically been held in late July or early August at José Martí Park and occasionally at partner sites across the county. https://www.amigosforkids.org/ — Registration tends to open in June or early July; check the site in early summer. Pre-registration is required; walk-up availability is limited.

Municipal and Neighborhood Events

Miami-Dade is a county of distinct cities, and several municipalities run their own annual back-to-school events separately from the large countywide programs. These tend to require proof of residency in that city, so they're most useful for families who live in or near that municipality.

City of Doral — Annual Back to School Event
The City of Doral has hosted an annual back-to-school event in partnership with local school board members that has distributed thousands of backpacks, offered free haircuts, and provided food and family activities. The event has been held in early August. Registration has been required in past years. Check the City of Doral's website and social media accounts each July for current-year details and registration information. Residency in or near Doral has been a factor in eligibility at past events.

100 Black Men of South Florida — North Miami
The nonprofit 100 Black Men of South Florida has partnered with Chase Bank for a community day in North Miami that has included backpack giveaways, free haircuts for students, financial literacy resources for parents, and entertainment. Past events have been held in late July near the Chase Community Branch at 12600 NW 7th Ave., North Miami. The event has drawn families from across the north part of the county. Check https://100blackmensf.org/ for current-year details.

Miami-Dade County Tax Collector — Midway Crossings
In recent summers, the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector's Office has partnered with local school board members to distribute backpacks filled with school supplies at its Midway Crossings office location. Hundreds of backpacks have been given out at past events, which have not required advance registration. Follow the Tax Collector's office at mdctaxcollector.gov for announcements about current-year participation. This is a government office event, not a nonprofit drive — call ahead to confirm the current year's event before visiting.

Salvation Army — Apple Tree Program
The Salvation Army's Apple Tree program works differently from a standard giveaway event. It operates through a sponsor-a-child model: donors select an eligible child and purchase a specific set of back-to-school clothing and supplies for that child — including uniforms, shoes, and a backpack. Families with children in need are connected to sponsors through the program rather than attending a public event.

The Salvation Army operates four locations across Miami-Dade County, including locations in Miami, Little Haiti, and South Miami. Eligibility is for low-income households with children under 18. Contact the Salvation Army location nearest to you to ask about the Apple Tree program and whether your child may be eligible for the current year. https://miami.salvationarmyflorida.org/— Additional information on Miami-Dade Salvation Army services is on our Miami-Dade Salvation Army page.

For M-DCPS Students in Unstable Housing — Project UP-START
Miami-Dade County Public Schools operates Project UP-START, the district's program for students experiencing housing instability — including children living doubled-up with other families, in motels, in shelters, or in other temporary situations. Under federal McKinney-Vento protections, these students can access supplies, enrollment support, and transportation assistance through their school without delay, regardless of whether they have typical enrollment documentation.

The Shop at Lindsey Hopkins Technical College is a district-operated resource center that provides enrolled M-DCPS students with clothing, backpacks, school supplies, food, toiletries, and other personal items year-round — not just in August. Access is through school staff referral. If your child is in an M-DCPS school and your family is in an unstable housing situation, ask the school's front office to connect you with the school's McKinney-Vento liaison, or contact Project UP-START directly at [email protected]. This is a legal protection and a district program — there is no seasonal giveaway window or income documentation required beyond confirming housing instability.

For Children in Foster Care

Voices for Children Foundation
Voices for Children Foundation, the nonprofit that serves as the guardian ad litem program for Miami-Dade County's foster care system, has partnered with organizations and corporate sponsors in past years to host back-to-school shopping events for children in county foster placements. These events are arranged through the foster care system rather than as public giveaways. Approximately 1,600 children are in Miami-Dade County foster care at any given time; if you are a caregiver for any of them, contact Voices for Children to ask about current back-to-school assistance. https://beavoice.org/

211 Miami — Referral Line for Smaller and Church-Based Programs

The 211 helpline in Miami-Dade is operated by United Way of Miami-Dade and connects callers with more than 4,000 local resources, including school supply programs, emergency food, and financial assistance. The line is staffed in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, 24 hours a day. Calling or texting 211 is the most reliable way to find smaller neighborhood-level and church-based events that don't receive wide coverage — particularly once the large August events have ended and school is approaching.
