Public assistance in Hamilton County Ohio.

The main government agency in Hamilton County Ohio is the HCJFS, and they administer various public assistance, state, and federal government programs. Many families with children and those who are struggling can qualify for support from the state and county.

Cash assistance and grants are offered from TANF. This is the main federal government and state of Ohio public program. It is the name of the source that that funds many of the cash and general assistance programs that are available across Hamilton County Ohio and Cincinnati. The county can provide limited dollars for a monthly payment through direct deposit or the EPPIC debit card. Financial aid is offered to low-income families with minor children at home.

The Temporary Assistance Needy Family program in Hamilton County is called Ohio Works First, and it offers short term support to qualified families while parents work their way toward becoming self-sufficient over the long term.

There is a time limit to these resources. Qualified families can only receive cash assistance for a maximum of 36 months. While it can be extended in certain situations, there are additional conditions that need to be met in order to have this done. For example, a Hamilton County family needs to be experiencing a clearly defined hardship. Or they need to have what is known as Good Cause. Either way, all state of Ohio public assistance is always limited and has conditions, so only apply when you truly need help.

Food assistance/stamps is a monthly cash voucher and benefit that is given to low income families and individuals. The government support can help people buy the healthy groceries they need for their household Benefits from the SNAP food stamp program are sent to beneficiaries using a plastic debit card called the Ohio Direction Card. Families can buy groceries at supermarkets, grocery stores, and other retailers across Cincinnati and Hamilton County.

Medical bill assistance is offered from Medicaid. This is a federally and state of Ohio funded health care insurance coverage program. There are two main parts of the program, and they are Covered Families and Children (CF&C) as well as Aged, Blind, and Disabled (ABD). HCJFS oversees Medicaid in the county, and they provide health care coverage to pregnant women, low income-eligible parents and their children up to age 21, preventive and treatment services up to age 21, and older adults.

 

 

 

 

Child Care services can be provided too. This is an option when the parent is either employed or in job training. The county can use public funds to pay for a portion of the child care bills for eligible low and moderate-income families. Only certain day or child care providers can be used, and they need to be certified by Hamilton County. This will help ensure they are safe and meet all standards.

Employment programs are offered under the umbrella program of Workforce Development. It assists Hamilton County residents with receiving job training, or it can even help them get a new job. Programs include Community Link, Super Jobs, and Food Stamp Employment & Training (FSET).

The Hamilton County Job and Family Services operates this employment program in partnership with Southwest Ohio Workforce Investment Board, City of Cincinnati, and the Hamilton County government. They also rely on the federal government and the Workforce Investment Act grant program, including Dislocated Worker and Youth assistance programs.

Some of the services offered include Job postings, Outplacement assistance, Skills assessment, On-the-Job Training (OJT), and Layoff aversion consulting. Other employment support will also be given to the underemployed in Hamilton County Ohio.
