Financial assistance programs from Greensboro area Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army in Greensboro and Guilford County North Carolina is an organization that can provide help to qualified individuals and families. There are various emergency assistance programs, ranging from free food to rent or utility bill help, free Christmas gifts, school supplies or motel vouchers and more. The faith based charity helps the poor, low income, and needy in the community.

If you are faced with a crisis, such as job loss, medical emergency, reduction in hours, or an unexpected car repair, then certain emergency assistance programs may be offered. The Salvation Army in Guilford County will also offer self-sufficiency and case management services. Both financial help and guidance can be offered to qualified individuals in Guilford County.

Emergency assistance for bills, rent, and housing

Financial assistance, if available, will be offered by appointment only. The organization will only help qualified families with dealing with past eviction notices or utility disconnection/shut offs. A significant amount of proof and support is needed; including the person must have a social security card, proof of income, and picture ID, among other conditions.

Tenants facing eviction, homeowners with a foreclosure notice, and the homeless can try for homeless prevention from the Guilford County Salvation Army and state of North Carolina. There are various housing and Urban Development programs (such as section 8), FEMA resources, and Emergency shelter Grants. The goal is to stop homelessness and evictions in Greensboro County. Special utility assistance may be offered by the Salvation Army for Piedmont Natural Gas and Duke Energy customers, in partnership with those energy companies. During the hot summer months, programs may assist with paying cooling and air conditioning bills. In the winter, funds may be paid out for heating bills and costs. All assistance available in Greensboro is limited, and is offered on a first come-first serve basis.

Additional emergency assistance may be offered as well. Greensboro families can turn to the Salvation and look into the possibility of housing assistance. This can come in many forms, including rent help, utility bill assistance, mortgage and housing counseling. A main goal is to prevent homelessness and ensure people have a safe and affordable place to live. Food boxes and assistance is offered. Only about the first 20 individuals can receive help, and distribution will start most weekdays and people will often line up. Proof of need most be provided for free food or groceries as well. Guilford County residents need to bring a picture ID, social security cards, proof of income such as paystubs, and other supporting documents as needed.

A program known as Homeless Shelter to Success can help identify each reason for evictions or homelessness in the community. Case managers can target the problem, and then stabilize the situation so that the resident can work towards mid to long term self-sufficiency.

The first 30 days of this self-sufficiency and housing program are an initial probationary period.  Salvation Army clients are expected to work with their case manager and adhere to all shelter guidelines and make positive first steps toward self-sufficiency. At the end of this probationary period, the participant's progress will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Some of what is provided includes personal hygiene and household products. Warm, balanced meals are served each day, or pick up a bag lunch. Transportation assistance can be offered for job interviews or doctor appointments. Other items include Case Management, Access to computers for e-mail and job searches, Clothing vouchers, Computer and Internet training, and even Educational supportive services.

Clothing vouchers may be provided at most once every three months. Each person named can receive up to 12 pieces of clothing, and proof of income, residency, and other supporting information is needed. Many people will stop by in order to get clothes for school, work, or coats and winter attire.

The Salvation Army Christmas Assistance Program, which is also the Angel Tree program, can provide meals, gifts, and toys. Both low income families with children and seniors may benefit from this service.

Shelters and/or short term transitional housing may be provided too. This is offered if people have been evicted. Applicants need to bring proof of their lack of housing and other items. A case manager from the Salvation Army will also work with the client in order to locate longer term permanent housing solutions.

The Greensboro Salvation Army Center of Hope is the name of the short term shelter, and it provides services to dozens of single women, men, children, and their families. It offers them access to emergency homeless shelter, legal counseling, and other support.

 

 

 

 

Free or low cost medical and dental care may be arranged too by the Salvation Army. There are a many clinics, health and dental centers, and well as government programs such as Medicaid available.
