All of this is usually offered first come and served.

Where to get help with rent in northern VA and Fairfax County

Northern Virginia Family Service is a regional non-profit at 10056 Dean Drive Manassas VA 20110. Rent, energy bill, and deposit assistance is part of the Homeless Prevention Program (HPP). Any grants are combined with case management services. The homeless can also be placed into shelters and given money to pay for security deposits. Services are in Spanish and available to immigrants. Annandale Christian Community For Action - Address is 12011 Government Center Parkway,  Fairfax VA 22035. Dial (703)222-0880. Applications are reviewed on a one-off basis. Rent, energy bill, and other help is provided.

Cornerstones of Fairfax County is the regional community action agency. There are multiple sites, as noted below.  Fairfax County residents can get help for rent and household supplies. Another focus of the non-profit is on given referrals, and clients can learn about LIHEAP. There are also other government grants for housing from ESG, local transitional housing units, and loan programs. They also support the disabled, unemployed, and job seekers with housing stability and other services.

Fairfax County Salvation Army helps people regardless of their faith, gender, ethnicity or age from 4915 Ox Road, Fairfax, VA 22030. Very limited financial aid is given in an emergency when funds allow. But the center may also offer referrals or other social services. A homeless shelter, a few funds for rent or utility bills or to move, low cost thrift store and other support is offered. Main phone: (703)385-8700.

Legal Services of Fairfax/North Virginia – One services from the non-profit will address housing issues. Seniors can get help no matter what, and other families on a low income can receive free legal aid. Lawyers can work to stop evictions, offer referrals to rent programs, address repairs needed by landlord and more. Herndon-Reston FISH location is 1141 Elden Street, Herndon VA 20170. Any cash payments for rent are given right to the landlord. The charity only assists families, seniors, and the working poor in Reston or Herndon Virginia. For hours, dial (703)222-0880.

Fairfax County Coordinated Services Planning is a government affiliated agency that serves the entire County. The homeless, tenants behind on their rent, and struggling homeowners can call for assistance. Learn about rent or security deposit assistance programs, grants, free motel vouchers, and legal aid or mediation. All these programs, run by local non-profits or the government, work to stop homelessness in the county.

The information is free. Coordinated Services Planning is a referral service. They help the low income, renters, unemployed and people in crisis with a variety of needs. Call 703-222-0880 to get information on housing, rental assistance, homeless prevention, free furniture programs and more.

Committee for Helping Others, or CHO, only provides services in the towns of Vienna, Oakton, Dunn Loring, and Merrifield. Second Story, Young Mothers Program, helps women and teens under the age of 25 gain stability. Financial help, furniture, and shelter and more for young moms and/or single mothers as well as their children. Call 703-280-2162.

Catholics for Housing is based at 18139 Triangle Shopping Plaza Dumfries, VA 22026. Very low income applicants, including immigrants and/or Spanish speakers, can get a few hundred dollars for security deposit help or first months rent. There are also loan programs, free housing counseling and more, with all funds given to the landlord on behalf of the renter. Dial 703-221-4510.

St. Timothy Conference is part of St. Vincent de Paul Society. The non-profit charity-parish, uses donations and funding from the United Way and other agencies. SVDP of Fairfax County may offer emergency financial help for rent. In general, a pay or quit notice is needed plus the applicant needs to have a source of income. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington and Fairfax County has a couple sites. They work to stop homelessness, both from rent evictions or utility disconnects. A major focus is on immigrants and women fleeing violence. Financial help, guidance, support and more is offered race, religion, creed, or national origin.

Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services provides limited financial help on a case by case basis. Funds for rent, security deposits and more may be offered. The charity is at 8305 Richmond Highway, Alexandria, VA 22309. Dial 703-222-0880.

United Community only helps residents, tenants, and families in the zip codes of 22306, 22307, 22308, 22309, zip codes 22303, 22310, or 22315. Emergency rent, electric or water bills, and other support is offered from 7511 Fordson Road Alexandria, VA 22306. Dial 703-222-0880.

McLean, Share, Inc. - The address is 1367 Chain Bridge Rd, McLean, Virginia 22101. Main phone number is (703) 229-1414. The non-profit helps the cities of McLean, Great Falls and Pimmit. Grants for rent, utilities, moving costs, medical and more may be offered. Low income families, single moms or dads and working poor may be assisted with rental and housing needs.

Housing And Community Services Of Northern Virginia assists the county too. The address is 6231 Leesburg Pike #410, Falls Church, VA 22044. The non-profit offers a number of housing solutions. Applications to grants for paying rent, referrals to affordable apartments, security deposit assistance and more. They help families going through a difficult period as well as veterans and the elderly. Or learn about home buying programs, loans, and affordable apartments to lease. Lorton Community Action Center - 9518 Richmond Hwy, Lorton, Virginia 22079. Main number is (703) 339-5161. Residents of the Lorton area only can try this non-profit community action agency. Free counseling, information on home buying programs as well as loans, emergency rent help and other resources are offered. Budgeting, financial literacy and guidance is given along with grants for bills (utility, rent, mortgages, etc.).

For people that meet income limits and live In zip codes of 20120, 20121, 20122, 20124, 20151, 22033, or 22039, they may apply for emergency rental assistance, mortgage payments, fuel, and more. Government homeless prevention rental payment help and rapid rehousing is available. Fairfax County organization and charities offer homeless assistance, which incorporates some money for paying rent, rehousing, as well as utility or security deposit help. Very low income families and the disabled can apply for section 8 HUD vouchers for their rent. Self-sufficiency and home buying programs are also arranged. Or get landlord-tenant mediation, information on subsided homes for seniors or the disabled and other resources. There is also emergency section 8 housing vouchers in a crisis for certain clients.

Veteran and military member rent assistance programs in Northern Virginia

The agencies below, whether government or charitable, only provide help with rent, housing or deposits to members of the military, their families, veterans or survivors. There are various assistance programs for renters, people facing eviction, the homeless and others. Whether financial help from Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVH), free motel or hotel vouchers, grants from HUD-VASH, or other financial aid for bills or rent, resources are offered.

Volunteers of America Chesapeake & Carolinas runs the SSVF program. They help homeless veterans (or those close to eviction or foreclosure) gain stability. Grants, job programs, rent or starage fee help and more is offered from 1660 Duke Street Alexandria, Virginia 22314. Coast Guard Mutual Assistance location is 1005 North Glebe Road Suite 220 , Arlington, VA 22201. Phone (800)881-2462. Only Coast Guard members can get help. There is interest free loans for paying back rent, financial counseling, and other guidance.

Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society Navy Yard provides government grants and/or interest free loans as a form of temporary financial help. The money helps Marine and Navy members. Housing, transportation, deposits, rent, and other bills can be paid. Call 202-433-3364.

Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Army Community Service (JBMHH-ACS) - Programs include rent or burial help, food, eviction counseling and more. S.A.V.E. is also known as Savings Assessment and Financial Education, Final Salute, Inc. Any assistance is for female veterans only and/or active duty women service members.
