Applicants will need to be facing hunger and/or undergoing a short term crisis in order to get free groceries, boxes of food, household supplies and more. The free, emergency food pantries near you, listed below, often only cover a designated service area and all resources are very limited. However many Elkhart County charities, charities, and pantries give out free food as well as hygiene supplies today and weekly. The programs that are in place to fight hunger are wide ranging. Some of the food banks provide weekly supplemental goods for persons with disabilities or senior citizens. Others will ensure that a student from a low income household has some form of food over the summer months or a holiday, or that the homebound has a meal delivered to them as part of Meals on Wheels. So the assistance will vary. There are also free holiday food boxes, Thanksgiving turkeys, and Christmas meals served.

While financial aid for bills or rent may be offered, it is limited. Much more likely is the ability to get an emergency bag of food from the non-profit. They also have a clothing closet for work or school clothes, some Christmas toys and gifts, and Thanksgiving meals. Case managers will also help Elkhart families apply for food stamps.
