Assistance from Catholic Charities in Columbia County.

People who need help in Columbia, Suwannee, Hamilton, or Lafayette County Florida can contact Catholic Charities. The agency runs a regional office for the area. Some of the programs offered address housing, homeless services, mortgages, utilities, and more. People of all religions, backgrounds, and cultures can apply for help, and assistance is not limited to Catholic’s only.

Emergency utility and rental assistance is offered by appointment only, comes with restrictions, and funds are limited. Appointments for aid are taken by phone only, and you need to call 386-754-9180. Any type of funding is really focused on people facing homelessness or a shut off of their utilities or cooling services. While even more limited, mortgage assistance and other housing resources may be offered as well.

Additional emergency services that are available include, but are not limited to, prescription assistance and vouchers for approved medications, in particular when someone is faced with a serious condition. Free gasoline may be offered for job interviews or doctor appointments when starting a new job. Other items provided include clothing, personal hygiene Items, referrals to other area Florida and federal government agencies.

Most of the aid is offered for qualified families who have no other options available to them or have exhausted all other non-profit or government assistance. In addition to limited cash assistance, social workers will help guide people to stabilization and long term sufficiency.

The bottom line is that Lake City Regional Office of Catholic Charities serves those low income and others who are in need, and the charity can offer rent/ mortgage and utility bill assistance, a food pantry, homeless services and Christmas/holiday assistance. All of these resources are offered in Suwannee, Hamilton, Lafayette and Columbia counties Florida.

Groceries and food is also offered from the Food Bank of Suwannee Valley. This center works with Catholic Charities and serves Union, Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee Counties in Florida. Canned goods, holiday meals, and other support is provided to the low income in the region. So called “pop top” foods and ready to eat meals are available upon request for anyone without proper cooking facilities. Free Christmas meals may be distributed too. Other food assistance programs are available a few days per week at the Lake City location. Hours and distribution is limited, so please keep that in mind.

Donations, contributions, and volunteers are always needed, and will be tax deductible. The vast majority of all money donated to Catholic Charities goes to helping the less fortunate in your immediate region and will fund emergency services in your community.

If you have wanted to get involved and to give back to the community, but are not quite sure how to go about it, then call. If you want to make a difference and are clearly not sure where to begin then Catholic Charities can help get you started. It can set a great example for your children and will help them give back to society.
