Charity assistance programs from Churches Assisting People.

With a focus on satisfying basic needs, programs from Churches Assisting People can support people facing a crisis. While all resources are limited, the agency will try to help as a last resort, when individuals are out of options. The non-profit partners with other charities, churches and agencies to coordinate housing, food, and maybe even emergency financial aid to prevent homelessness or evictions. Other support services are also provided by the agency.

The basic services are there in an effort to help community residents in a crisis obtain essential items for daily living. Examples of what may be available by Churches Assisting People or its partners includes food, gently used clothing, free diapers, hygiene and cleaning products, as well as baby meals and formula. While hundreds of families are assisted every month, the faith based group does rely on donations and money being raised from the Horry County community.

Clients will be able to meet with volunteers, who can also serve as stabilization specialists. They will address the self-sufficiency aspect of the resources available, and that is part of case management which is expanded upon below. They will offer referrals when CAP can’t help.

They will help families from Horry County make use of basic services or assist them with identifying other resources and assistance programs that can help alleviate any form of financial crisis. The organization also has information on clothing banks that may have free used work or school clothing, and this is available for low-income or working poor individuals and families from across the county.

Many charities are churches from across Horry County work with CAP to distribute free food or meals to all qualified low-income households in the service territory. In order to be eligible for this service, households must meet income-eligibility requirements and present picture identification and proof of address. There are no restrictions to the number of times households or individuals from the community can receive monthly food distributions.

There are local churches that administer a community kitchen, commonly called a soup kitchen, in partnership with other charities. The goal is to provide free meals to Horry County residents, regardless of age, who are struggling with poverty or maybe even homeless. The organization also uses the center to identify the condition of indigent citizens who stop by and they may be referred to other services if applicable.

Local individuals, senior citizens and families in need can often obtain fresh fruit and vegetables via a community garden. It is run mostly by volunteers and paid for by donations from the area. It too is intended for citizens with low or fixed incomes.

Partnering with other agencies, such as the local community action agency or the Salvation Army, they offer both short- and long-term case management services to help needy individuals and families address physical, emotional and/or financial issues. Through case management, CAP assists clients as they work toward stability, full time employment and personal goals.

Limited financial assistance from Churches Assisting People

All financial aid is very limited. That being noted, working to end homelessness, the agency oversees a community housing partnership program and may be able to refer families to emergency loan programs for paying back rent. They are also able to refer people to affordable housing, which is available to formerly homeless individuals and families for up to 18 months.

For those that use this service, the agency provides supportive case management guidance to help program participants become financially self-sufficient and transition to permanent, stable housing. This will touch upon financial counseling, advocacy, service referral and follow-up, and weekly home visits are among the supportive services. This is available across Horry County, including in Myrtle Beach.
