Catholic Charities assistance programs San Mateo County.

The San Mateo County Catholic Charities provides a wide variety of assistance programs. There is homeless prevention and rehousing as well as help for immigrants, kids, homeless people and seniors. The charity, and its churches, have information on many social services and public aid programs available in the northern CA region. In some cases the organization will be able to directly offer assistance, but that is less common. More likely will be referrals to everything from Mercy Housing to Aging and Disability Centers to food pantries, transitional housing or government benefits.  Whether it is food or housing, assistance can often be arranged by the organization for qualified low income families.

Food resources from Catholic Charities

The Catholic Charity Senior Nutrition Program offers nutritious meals in a social setting with various activities and services available to low-income seniors, the elderly over 60 or their spouses in San Mateo County. The meals are individualized per senior and their healthy history.

Examples include providing meals or free food boxes for those with diabetes, heart disease and hypertension which meet federal standards of 1/3 of the recommended dietary allowance. There are Ensure or Boost nutritional drinks, eggs, bread, low-sodium food and more. This is done to ensure the elderly maintain their health from a free or low cost meal.

In addition, clients to this service are screened, offered nutrition education and counseling if applicable.  There are even free Cooking Classes. The program also serves as a conduit for access to Meals on Wheels. This is when Catholic Charity screened volunteer drivers will deliver the food right to the home of the resident. For eligible households that are living on a low income, they can apply for Cal Fresh food stamps (SNAP). This benefit can help all persons in a residence who purchase and prepare food on a regular basis. It helps low-income seniors, the unemployed and others buy groceries. This is another government benefit that was formerly known as the Food Stamp Program. It provides financial help to supplement a budget.

Catholic Charities also coordinates Cal Fresh - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Employment & Training (SNAP E&T). This is combined with the food programs indicated above. Staff help vulnerable individuals find independence through access to work experience, education and job retention training activities. This will incorporate individualized attention through case management is available to eliminate any barriers to finding stable, long term employment.

San Mateo Catholic Charities housing assistance

Homeless Prevention and Rehousing is available from Catholic Charities in San Mateo County. This includes partnerships with local charities and the government. Financial help for housing costs (rent, electric bills, etc.) as well as motel vouchers or shelters are offered. The goal is to to stop evictions and/or rehousing people, but prevention is a focus. Shelter services work with homeless individuals in San Mateo and even entire families. The client will be given a bed to sleep in for a few days including transitional housing from Bay View Access Point, Rita da Cascia Community, and others. There is also income based housing for seniors from Edith Witt Senior Community. Other support will be given to them as well, based on need.

That may be a meal, clothing, or other basic needs in San Mateo County from Catholic Charity churches. In addition, case management is available which provides access to much needed resources throughout the community. There may be housing referrals, treatment for an addiction or mental health challenge, employment and applications to entitlements.

As part of this service, staff will help them people find stable, long term housing once they are stable. This will involve outreach with the client and partners, including private landlords and Mercy County, across San Mateo County. So while shelter is arranged, many of these services are also provided through a collaboration with various community non-profit organizations. As one additional example, the county and their Housing Stabilization team provides emergency shelter for clients which expands during the winter months.

 

 

 

Senior programs from San Mateo Catholic Charities

Catholic Charities helps seniors. A key partner of San Mateo Catholic Charities is the Aging and Disability Center and they also offer their own programs, such as an Adult Day Service. This unit offers a multitude of help for low income seniors, including those on social security. There is also support for persons living with physical disabilities, co-morbidities and other developmental disabilities, regardless of their age.

Here is a brief list of what is offered to clients: assessment, consultation, resource coordination, and service planning. Catholic Charities helps arrange companionship, economic support and other assistance.

Information as well as applications are available to Medical Assistance. This is also known as Medicare. It operates as a fully servicing health care insurance program specifically for very low income families or those living in poverty.

This government insurance plan covers many health related services including nursing home costs, in-patient/outpatient hospital care, pharmacy, basic physician care, medical day care, personal care, mental health, and the government may even pay a portion of substance abuse treatment.  For clients already receiving the benefits of Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA) and Federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI), they automatically qualify for Medical Assistance / (Medicare or Med-Cal in CA).

The state of California Temporary Cash Assistance and Temporary Disability Assistance Program (CalFresh) is available for people diagnosed with a disability, including seniors. Or the first option, CalFresh, is for low income families that are completely out of options. This program offers benefits, cash assistance and resources for gainful employment to those that apply.

Additional resources

Assistance is offered for kids. Youth and Child Development is an educational and referral service for  struggling families or with children or single parents. Many forms of assistance are available such as simple referrals from Catholic Charities. Parents can learn where to go for consultation on child development, parenting issues or follow-up for families in need of early intervention services. If and when needed, families and their subsequent providers from San Mateo County will have access to a mental health consultation on-site in child care programs.

For parents with children that meet certain government income guidelines, there are child care subsidy programs available through the state of CA. The programs that may be able to help eligible families are the federal/state funded CalWorks, which helps low-income parents or those with no money find and pay for child care. Catholic Charities will assist with applications. Get help paying for child care from CalWorks.

This is for parents that are working or in job training. Interested candidates only need one application for access to both programs. An assigned caseworker from Catholic Charities will make an assessment to decide eligibility and which service is the best fit for the household. Families with an income over scale for CalWorks will be reviewed for meeting criteria for the subsidy.

 

 

 

Catholic Charity immigrant and migrant Services in San Mateo County help newcomers. The purpose of this service is to help the immigrant population in San Mateo County. There are many resources used to meet this goal. The staff will offer nutritional advice, food assistance, medical, educational, low-cost legal and other services. It helps not just migrants, but also refugees as well as illegal immigrants to some capacity. In order to apply for this service, recipients need to have the proper documentation. They will also need to formally apply with a Catholic Charity staff member in the office.
