First and foremost, they are focused on feeding the hungry and helping people facing an emergency. This is generally done by providing enough groceries or fresh foods to last for a few days. Many food pantries are open today and also provide free dog or cat food to seniors or the disabled.

There are also several long term government food assistance programs for the unemployed or working poor. in Madison and Rankin County.
