Operation Stand Down Tennessee veteran services.

Operation Stand Down Nashville, Inc. (OSDN) is the primary nonprofit resource for veterans in Middle Tennessee and one of the leading veteran service providers in the state. Its programs extend to veterans across Tennessee. OSDN delivers social services that include transitional housing, rental and utility assistance, case management, and more. Find more information on Operation Stand Down Nashville including contact information below.

While the agency is headquartered in Nashville, it can also provide referrals to other nonprofits and government agencies in all parts of TN. They also help veterans in all parts of the state. There are also additional employment readiness training and placement. Its mission is to ensure that veterans who served the nation have access to the support needed to build stable, independent lives.

Core services from OSDN including housing support

Centers across Tennessee offer a wide range of services, with special focus on homeless veterans or those close to eviction. For example, there are the following resources.

  • Short-term emergency rental assistance can help veterans avoid losing their housing and as noted there are also details on other statewide and local TN programs to pay rent.
  • The Transitional Housing Program gives veterans a safe, structured environment where case managers provide support with the goal of permanent, stable housing.
  • In Nashville proper, OSDN maintains dedicated apartments and transitional units for honorably discharged veterans, combining housing with case management to prepare participants for independent living.
  • Other veteran focused financial aid programs are available from OSDN, even including sources of free money for veterans from charities or the government.

Operation Stand Down also coordinates an annual Stand Down event each fall, modeled after the original grassroots program begun by veterans in the 1980s. The event brings together dozens of community service providers to deliver food, clothing, VA benefit enrollment, health screenings, legal aid, and other support services. This is all done in a single day, free of charge to veterans and their families.

The organization relies heavily on donations and contributions from individuals, businesses, and community groups. Every dollar goes toward practical help for veterans, - whether that means shelter, food, job support, or counseling. Donations are tax-deductible and directly fund life-changing programs.

Employment and job readiness programs for veterans from Operation Stand Down

Finding and keeping meaningful employment is central to Operation Stand Down’s mission. The organization employs a team of employment specialists who coach veterans through every step of the process. Support includes résumé development, interview practice, digital skills training, credit counseling, and money management classes.

Clients also receive one-on-one case management and transportation assistance for interviews. Counselors work alongside veterans not only until they secure work but also to ensure job retention and career advancement. Employers across Middle Tennessee regularly partner with OSDN to recruit veterans, recognizing their skills, reliability, and leadership. Clients will also have access to computer training (even a free laptop for a job) and job retention counseling.

The Operation Stand Down Thrift Store in Nashville (located at 1125 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203) doubles as a workforce program as well as a source of direct aid - such as free or low cost items. Veterans gain retail and customer service experience by working in the store, while other veterans in need can access free or low-cost clothing. Revenue from sales supports OSDN’s Tennessee Veteran Service Center programs.

Comprehensive case management for veterans in TN

Whether through transitional housing or community outreach, every veteran in Operation Stand Down’s programs has access to professional case managers. Staff members guide participants in securing benefits, applying for financial aid, getting health care referrals, or even basic needs such as personal care items and food.

The agency takes a holistic approach and utilizes a home setting that provides a structured, secure, and safe environment.  Financial help is combined with long term guidance. Hundreds of veterans turn to OSDN each year for help paying bills, connecting to legal aid, or simply having a hot meal and a haircut provided with dignity.
