Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging assistance programs.

Senior citizens as well as the disabled that need information on programs for their needs can contact Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging. The agency, which operates as a non-profit, can direct individuals to local community resources such as meals or free or affordable medical care. The team at the organization are well trained professionals who have knowledge of assistance programs in the region.

Not only that, but the case managers can help older people identify and locate services that can respond to the questions, needs and concerns of senior citizens or their caregivers. The center can provide support as needed to those that need it. Programs available through the non-profit are funded by the federal government and are targeted to low-income residents who are at or below the federal poverty guidelines.

The Agency on Aging Case Management Program helps seniors, aged 60 and up, sort through and make sense of the wide variety of available home and community-based services. They also direct them to senior financial aid, including loans while waiting on social security.

Case managers from Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging often meet with the family members. Others that participate will be seniors other adults. This is done with the goal to meet a single need, or to meet several needs, through coordination of services provided for by the Senior Care and Older Americans Acts. Referrals may be given to the homemaker program or attendant care.

In home and nursing home care for senior citizens

Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging receives funding from the Older Americans’ Act and Senior Care. This is what can help pay for in-home services as an alternative to nursing home care. This service is funded by the state, and clients are required to pay a copay for it, with the amount determined according to income. Another criteria is that the individual must be 60 years of age or older to benefit from such services, which can include Wellness Monitoring, Adult Day Care, Personal Emergency Response System, Toileting, Bathing, Nurse Evaluations, Meal Preparation, or even House Cleaning.

Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging CARE - Client Assessment, Referral, and Evaluation is required for everyone from the region who is seeking nursing home care. The process needs to be conducted prior to entering a facility.

 

 

 

The CARE assessment process typically takes a short period of time, and consists of a form developed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment for the purpose of evaluating an individual’s health and functional abilities. The interview is conducted as a personal interview between any caregiver, a CARE assessor, or even the individual seeking care or the person who may be family or a guardian/conservator.

This one-on-one meeting with a CARE assessor provides an opportunity to explore and discuss available long-term care options that can be offered by the aging center. There can even look into financial aid to pay for home care from PACE. The intent is to assist the individual as they explore options for appropriate long-term care services, as well as to collect data on the need for community-based or home services.

Free home, home repairs, and medical equipment

Food assistance and nutrition programs may offer free meals that enhance and/or maintain appropriate nutrition levels for adults over the age of 60. Home-delivery services are available for seniors who are temporarily or permanently home bound due to physical or mental impairment. Alternatively, one hot congregate meal is served per day in Wyandotte and Kansas City. This is done at local nutrition sites. Or find free food pantries in Wyandotte County.

The Agency on Aging’s of Wyandotte Caregiver Program assists and supports adults who make tremendous sacrifices. Many people assist disabled relatives, the frail and/or minor children. Being a caregiver is never an easy role. They often take a financial hit and use their personal time. There is also often a significant cost to the caregiver in terms of frustration, physical and mental strain, stress and feeling overwhelmed.

The Caregiver Program helps by providing Training, Information, Various types of Assistance, Attendant and/or Personal Care, Counseling, Support Groups, and more. Even grandparents can take part.

The Lending Closet for Medical Appliances from Wyandotte - Leavenworth Area Agency on Aging stocks some items to lend on a temporary basis to those who lack funds to purchase them. Items that may be available at a given time include walkers, canes, knee walkers, wheelchairs, grab bars, and commodes. A very limited number of adult diapers are also available from the aging center.

The Wyandotte - Leavenworth Aging Home Maintenance Program assists senior citizens who lack the support systems or resources to make needed minor home repairs. Volunteers may also offer them limited seasonal lawn care and snow removal. This service may also be available for qualifying seniors.

 

 

 

 

For a variety of reasons, many senior citizens or those with a disability are no longer able to keep house,  do seasonal chores, or make minor home repairs. Others may be temporarily incapacitated by injury, illness or a recent hospital stay, and are in need of a short-term hand. Or locate other free elderly home repair services.

Some seniors from the region require long-term assistance in order to continue living safely and independently in their own homes. To meet both needs, the Chores and More Program, formerly known as Handy Works, may be able to do the work for them. Needed tasks are completed by screened private contractors and by volunteers from churches, schools and non-profit community organizations.

Wyandotte County Senior centers

Senior Center sites in Kansas City and Wyandotte offer people an opportunity to participate in activities and take advantage of a variety of services. They may hold sessions including assisted transportation, telephoning, and provide free health screenings.

Each center is a great place to socialize together, share a free hot nutritious meal in the dining area, make use of computers for whatever use they want, work out on the exercise equipment, and enjoy the recreation area. The only eligibility requirement for participating at the Senior Centers is that everyone must be 60 years of age or older.
