The programs available are extensive and can include hot meals, free groceries passed out daily - today, holiday assistance, and applications for government benefits. The centers distribute low cost or free food today to families and individuals who need help, regardless of their income, religions, or backgrounds. Thousands of people receive some form of assistance every month, including children, single moms and seniors from Meals on Wheels. In addition to offering direct aid, the Worcester food pantries can often refer those who need help to government programs, local charities, or non-profit organizations. Many of the free food pantries also give out holiday food baskets, including at Easter, Thanksgiving, or Christmas.

In addition, more non-food type items may be distributed. Several Worcester County area food pantries may also offer free hygiene items and toiletries. Other goods from the charities include supplies such as free diapers for newborns or single moms, Meals on Wheels, and much more.

Salvation Army
There are multiple locations in Worcester County. There is free food, groceries and meals. Fresh or canned groceries, baby formula, and holiday food baskets. Or apply for financial help, SNAP food stamps and more. The charity helps the unemployed, low income and struggling in Worcester County.

  • Salvation Army - 739 Water Street, Fitchburg 01420, dial 978-342-3300. They also offer some financial aid to the working poor in Worcester County. Or apply for free Christmas meals from Adopt a Family. There is also a thrift store, soup kitchen, and applications to food stamps.
  • Salvation Army - Citadel - Address of food bank - 640 Main Street, Worcester, 01608. Call 508-756-7191. Programs include a free food bank, clothing closet, and Christmas and Thanksgiving food baskets. Or inquire into funds for rent or toys fro children from the Angel Tree program.
  • Salvation Army - 29 Congress Street , Milford Massachusetts 01757. Dial 508-473-0786. Assistance includes a thrift store and food pantry. Other items may be formula, snacks for students, and emergency boxes of groceries with meats and canned goods.

Saint Vincent De Paul Society in Worcester County
Multiple parishes are in the community. A number of social service programs are available. It includes free groceries, shelter, and basic needs such as clothing. Some financial resources may also be available in Worcester County. There is a thrift store with low cost or free kitchen supplies as well as paper products from the pantry, soap, detergent and more. Get fruits, vegetables, dairy supplies and other goods.

    This Worcester County food bank is open Monday, 6 to 7 PM, Wednesday, 4 to 5 PM. Christmas meals or turkeys may be served as well.
  • St. Mary's Church is at 247 Hamilton St, Southbridge, MA 01550. Dial the pantry at 508-764-3226. Perishable items such as fruits and vegetables may be served. Or get clothing, school supplies, or a Christmas toy for your child.

Community Action Organizations and Agencies
There are many in Worcester County. Most focus on certain towns. There is everything from free food to budgeting workshops, Nutrition Education classes, pantries, USDA Summer Feeding Program applications and more. The goal is to offer free food, financial help, grants and long term self-sufficiency services.

  • Community Services of SDA - Lancaster Community Services Center - 129 Bolton Road, Lancaster 01561, For information, dial 978-365-7152. This Worcester County food bank is available from Tuesdays, 9:00 AM to 12 PM.. The non-profit helps the less fortunate, poor, unemployed, and others with meeting nutritional needs.

Tri-Parish Community Church - Hardwick Senior Center

Distribution: 1st & 3rd Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 AM. During the months of July and August, the first Friday only groceries and food is offered. There is also free Meals on Wheels home delivery services, ensure for the elderly population and recreational trips or cooking classes.

Low income families in an emergency can receive free food. There may be peanut butter, soup, dairy, and frozen food too. The pantry may help for a few days per month.

Catholic Charities
Multiple churches offer help. Food pantries are open today and help people with no money or a low income. Get free groceries including pasta, bread, tuna, meats and more. Or apply for Meals on Wheels. There are also Mobile Farm Markets and other services in Worcester County.

Spanish Speakers can receive support too. There is also free food and meals for immigrants. The center will try to provide what the culture may be familiar with too.

WHEAT Community Connections - United Way of Tri-County

They operate a free food pantry. It covers the regions of Berline, Bolton, Clinton, Sterling, and Lancaster too. The groceries may be cereal, fresh fruit, baby formula, and much more. They also give free canned food, toiletries, laundry detergent, adult or child diapers (as available) to families and individuals in need.
