Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency assistance programs.

Dozens of social services and emergency financial assistance programs are administered by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. The organization provides services that offer both short term help and long term relief. Assistance may be available for rent, food, utility bills, job searches, foreclosure counseling and much more. They operate across the region, including in both metropolitan Detroit and Wayne County.

Free food and basic needs

Food programs are offered in partnership with pantries, churches, food banks, and social service groups across Wayne County. Both groceries and maybe even non-food items are offered. The Community Baby Shower can provide basic needs, food, meals, formula, and more for low-income expectant parents. This also helps single and teenage moms in Wayne County Michigan. Find other sources of free stuff for babies.

A key service across Wayne County is the Intake and Referral Call Center. The location serves as the main point of entry to get information on social services and financial aid. Specialists identify client needs and provide referral to non-profit community and government resources including Emergency Utility Bill Assistance, Rental & Mortgage Assistance, Clothing, Michigan Benefits Access Program, Clothing, and other General Assistance. The Energy Education Program will teach people in Wayne County Michigan how to lower their energy bills and save money using easy and low-cost tips. Call (734) 284-6999 to inquire about possible dates for the workshops and tips.

Housing resources from the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency

The Wayne County Shelter + Care Program can provide long term, permanent rental assistance to homeless mentally-ill/dually-diagnosed families and individuals. Housing assistance and related services will be created to meet the needs of participants. All aid is offered in order to help them maintain housing stability. The housing units operate from scattered-site, private-market units and apartments. The individuals who stay at the centers will also be provided ongoing support services and case management for the duration of their stay.

 

 

 

The Homeless Network Project is coordinated by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. The program provides a wide range of services and emergency assistance to homeless individuals and families in Detroit and other regions. The non-profit works closely with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Continuum of Care model. The homeless and individuals facing eviction may receive outreach, transitional housing, case management, transportation, permanent housing placement, funds to pay for security deposits and direct referrals to appropriate services as required. Additional support can include employment services and health counseling.

Free Foreclosure Intervention is coordinated by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. It provides assistance, counseling and support to homeowners that are struggling to keep up with their housing payments and paying their mortgage on time. The community action agency is a HUD and MSHDA Certified Agency. Specialists can provide families with counseling and education in order to understand the process and find a solution. Homeownership and Buying Programs are offered by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. The HUD certified non-profit offers education, homeownership counseling, and assistance throughout Detroit and Wayne County. They also work with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and local charities and non-profits.

The agency will offer Homebuyer Education Classes which provides information on the home buying process, credit and qualifying for a mortgage, and budgeting. There will also be Individual Consultation with a Homeownership Counselor and the participant will get a personal credit report consultation and mortgage readiness assessment. They will also help you get approved for a mortgage with a bank or lender.

Financial assistance, loans, or grants may be offered as part of the Homebuyer Assistance Programs. Low income families in the county may receive help in paying for closing costs or down payments. Case management, education, and employment resources

Employment assistance is provided as part of Employment Linkages. This offers job seekers with placement, employment search, and job support. It is provided to homeless individuals. These services are offered in partnership with transitional housing and homeless shelter providers to meet the specific employment needs of the homeless, recently evicted or even those that just moved into a new home. Another similar resource is the Employment and Training Program. Staff work to improve client job readiness and skill levels of Detroit residents. Counselors from Metropolitan Community Action Agency help to identify barriers that can delay or hinder employment. Staff will then develop Individualized Service Plans based on the goals and skills of the client. Activities and workshops available include Pre-employability skills training, Resume development, Soft Skills Counseling, Establishment of references, and free tips on job search in the Detroit area. In some cases Bus tickets and gas money will be passed out where applicable.

The Work Experience Program will place clients on site. The job seeker can gain new skills or remediate old skills. It can provide valuable experience for a resume.

Support Services Program gives on-going support and career counseling for customers that show progress in achieving their placement and vocational planning goals. All services provided by the Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency are individualized to clients’ needs and may include auto repair, uniforms/clothing for work, tools/supplies for work or training, text books, bus pass, driver's license restoration, certifications/licensure, and other vocational needs in accordance with the customer's service plan.

Free Computer Training is available in Detroit and across the county. Receive basic skills and certificates. It covers applications such as Microsoft software, internet job search techniques, and more.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families, or SSVF, is administered in partnership with Monroe County Opportunity Program. It provides military members and their families with valuable case management and housing stability services. It is mostly for Wayne County Michigan veterans and their families that are on the verge of homelessness, behind on their rent or currently homeless. Clients also get in-house and outside referrals to additional services and government agencies that clients can utilize to stabilize their housing situation and move towards self-sufficiency. The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is for residents and the low income that currently have  Housing Choice Vouchers (HCV or Section-8). The program will help them reduce dependence on public assistance and also obtain and maintain living wage employment.

Not only is case management available, but the FSS Program also offers a financial incentive to Wayne County participants who increase their earned income. It works by when a HCV holder experiences an increase in their household income, their rental payment portion will not increase and the money will instead be saved. Many other non-profits, such as Public Housing Agencies and Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) participate in the Family Self-Sufficiency program.

 

 

 

 

Head Start is organized by Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency. This is the primary federally funded preschool program for low income eligible families with children under the age of 5. The program provides a warm and comfortable environment where young children can learn, get a snack, grow, receive medical care, and develop. The program may offer Resources to FREE Medical and Dental Care, Full or Part Day Classes, Nutrition (free healthy meals and snacks), Language & Literacy Classes, Services for Children with Disabilities, and other educational resources.

After-School School-Age Youth Programs are located in Detroit. They coordinate enrichment and recreational activities. Students and youth enrolled in Wayne Counties After School programs receive high-quality care and enjoyable activities such as Computer learning and other technology, Homework assistance, Academic tutoring, and Community Service Opportunities.

Receive assistance in applying for Michigan Enrolls, the states Medicaid Enrollment Program. It will help residents approved for Medicaid benefits and provide them information and education regarding their government benefit options. Financial literacy and credit services

The Community Financial Center includes free financial coaching and classes to assist individuals and families that are committed to learning more about budgeting and improving their financial situation. Participants of these classes and workshops engage in Individualized Financial Independence Plans; Foundations of Wealth Building Classes; Ongoing One-on-One Financial Coaching; Tax Preparation Services; Debt Reduction Counseling; and Credit Repair.

Part of self-sufficiency is the Community Financial Center workshops. This is an in depth financial coaching program that entails credit report review, short and long-term goal setting, creating financial independence action plans, tax preparation services, and access to a variety of saving, banking and asset building services. There are also additional free Michigan non-profit credit counseling agencies.

The Individual Development Accounts (IDA) Program is known as Michigan $AVE$. This can help residents with lower incomes save money and build financial assets. Clients will also be provided with matching grants so that they can save even more money in less time. The funds will be used to buy a home, pay for school or college, or to start or expand a small business. Clients of IDA must also be willing to address their credit issues, reduce debts, and improve credit scores. Receive support from Financial Planning, a personal savings and budget plan, and learn how to avoid predatory lending.

Free Tax Preparation Program is offered in partnership with the Wayne County Asset Building Coalition. The organization provide free state and federal government income tax preparation and wealth building classes to lower income families and seniors.
