Rent assistance in Ventura County.

Find how to get rental assistance in Ventura County California. Several charity organizations, churches and government organizations provide grant money or other housing resources. Locate financial assistance programs that low-income individuals and families in Ventura County can use to get rent payment or security deposit help.

Each organization has its own housing assistance programs for struggling tenants. There is both emergency rental assistance offered for a crisis and long term rent relief programs to help people maintain their home or apartment in Ventura County. There are also other programs that are offered to prevent evictions, such as free lawyers that help tenants or grant money to move or pay a security deposit.

In addition to provide money to help with back rent or other housing costs, most places offer referrals to state, local, or federal government housing programs. As there are many other resources available to help a low-income family or someone in a crisis to the rent (or even utility bills), on their home.

Places that offer rent and security deposit assistance

California Rural Legal Assistance (and CRLA Migrant Project) coordinates several programs. Free lawyers help tenants, the elderly and others be giving legal aid to stop evictions. Community Action of Ventura County provides grant money to pay rent, energy help, and a wide range of social services. The programs address both short and long term needs. The financial help is part of the Commission on Human Concern, which is run from 621 Richmond Avenue, Oxnard, California 93030. Ventura County Housing Authorities help low-income families and those in povery find a place to live, and pay the rent on it. There are applications to section 8 housing choice vouchers (HUD) which will help pay a portion of rent on local apartments (or houses) in the private market. There are also emergency vouchers to bypass the wait list for women facing abuse.

  • The Area Housing Authority of the County of Ventura processes applications for section 8 housing vouchers. However there is almost always an extensive waiting list.   • The Housing Authority of the City of Port Hueneme is based at 746 Industrial Ave, Port Hueneme, CA 93041. Call (805) 986-6527

Ventura Center for Dispute Settlement is run by the local courts and DA. It is a free mediation service that can be used to help landlords and tenants find a solution - other than eviction. Call (805) 384-1313 to reach the Conflict Resolution Institute which overseas the program.

Oxnard Homeless Assistance is for renters facing eviction or the currently homeless. The program is run from 435 S D St, Oxnard, CA 93030. A wide variety of emergency programs are offered, including government homeless prevention which can be used to help with rent or other bills. They also work to rehouse people, help seniors over the age of 60, homeless vets in Ventura County and more. Phone: (805) 385-8044

Ventura County Catholic Charities administers some of their own rent assistance programs and also offer referrals. They also partner with other agencies, non-profits, and charities in the area. A diverse range of social services are provided to help meet the needs of the poor, immigrants and unemployed, among others. They even have referrals to emergency shelters in southern California.

Access basic needs assistance through programs that help prevent homelessness by subsidizing rental, security deposits and utilities’ payments. Outreach and housing counseling is provided too, including to migrant farm workers in Ventura County that need a place to live, and funds to pay the rent on it. Project Understanding is a regional non-profit that can offer rental assistance, eviction prevention, and even provides furniture and other support as part of First Step Center. Address is 2734 Johnson Dr., Ventura, CA 93003. They help rehouse single mothers or youth, provide assistance with security deposits and address other housing needs. Call (805) 652-1326.

Salvation Army Social Services has locations in the county. The Christian charity provide emergency short-term monetary and non-financial services. Get free motel room vouchers, temporary rent assistance, and help with applying to Section 8.

Help with rent in Ventura CountyVentura County Human Services Agency administers the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing program for income-eligible residents from throughout Ventura County. Apply for government funds through this program to pay for moving expenses, security deposit and first month’s rent. There may also be grants to help with ongoing monthly rental costs. Ojai Valley Outreach may have emergency loans for back rent, homeless case management, and eviction prevention advice. Seniors and the disabled can also call on the agency, and rental assistance is for Ojai resaidents only. They also help migrant farm workers in the community. Support the Enlisted of Ventura County will provide help to recent veterans as part of Operation Homefront. Funds for paying rent as well as travel, applications for VA benefits and grants, and other aid is offered. Telephone - 866-424-5210 or 1-877-264-3968

Ventura County Bar Association has lawyers that offer free services to tenants. The attorneys give representation to the low income and poor. Help for housing issues, such as evictions and disputes over utility deposits, is available as well as mediation. They also help immigrants with documentation if needed get the benefits (if any including housing) that they are qualified for. Lutheran Social Services has emergency help with bills, including rent, short term housing and more. The charity is, located at 80 E. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks, California 91360 (phone (805) 497-6207). A major focus is on seniors and the disabled. The non-profit can offer low income housing as well as rent assistance programs to the low income.

The Samaritan Center has multiple programs, focused on basic needs such as housing at 280 Royal Ave, Simi Valley, CA 93065. Southern California American Indian Resource Center of Ventura County can provide emergency rent money to pay rent, legal services, and other support. These programs are part of Emergency Services offered from 877 S Victoria Ave, Ventura, CA 93003. Native Americans only can apply, including for rent money or other programs. Call (805) 765-6243

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul offers rental help in Ventura County. Multiple parishes also offer free housing counseling, direct financial assistance (when funding permits). Ventura County Homeless Information and Referral line is an option for applications to rent relief or free vouchers for a hotel. Call 805-385-1800. A goal is to reduce homelessness, improve self-sufficiency, and offer housing assistance programs to the less fortunate and families facing poverty.

There are other agencies that partner with the Continuum of Care in Ventura County. While financial resources to pay rent or similar costs are limited, the organization can be an option.
