Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse Region programs.
One of the leading charities for Traverse City families is Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse Region. The faith based organization coordinates and works with various churches throughout the region in an effort to help less fortunate families. Free stuff, transportation or crib ministries, Christmas help and more is offered. When someone needs help, they need to call the Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse Clearinghouse at the number below.
Much of what is available is done by referrals, and the services offered should not be thought of as a crisis solution. Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse Region Michigan operates an information and referral line for needy residents. This service, as well as most of the resources they offer, depends on volunteers and donations from the community. So while items such as food, baby supplies, home repairs, and more may be offered, everything is limited.
Volunteers will work with the client to confirm their needs. They will then refer, or link clients, with local churches and the resources they offer. Or they may provide referrals to other non-profit community organizations in Grand Traverse County. Some of the main programs are noted below.
Free basic needs from Love Thy Neighbor Grand Traverse
A Food Pantry will have groceries and other hygiene items. Love Thy Neighbor works with a number of church based pantries and together they offer supplies to the greater community. The items may be fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and like items. The food pantry ministries are owned by the individual’s church however they are supported by Love Inc. Many will also offer holiday support as well, such as free Christmas food baskets.
Financial Literacy and New Directions Life Skills will help client’s manage their money. Volunteers from Grand Traverse and other individuals (maybe even credit counselors) help individuals reach financial stability. This is done through their Manage Money classes, credit repair services and personal mentoring. There are classes on how to rebuild credit or pay down debts. Or referrals to non-profits in the region that offer help with debt.
Powerful Parenting classes are for new or current parents, including single moms. Clients will work with staff and volunteers in an effort to bring the best out of your child. Enrollees can take part in discussions on effective parenting, learn about food and nutrition, learn effective communication and more. They can also get information on government programs, such as Head Start, WIC, and others.
Church based Layette and Crib Ministries will offer income qualified parents a free crib and mattress or a so called pack-and-play. Among other things, this will help ensure a safe sleeping environment for their infant. There may also be home delivery services of a baby layette for new parents in the Traverse City area.
Infant and Toddler supplies are offered. This can also help newborns too. Love Inc. works with numerous area churches to provide them access to a well-stocked baby pantry that offers formula, diapers and other infant/toddler items for income qualified parents in need.
Thrift Shops are available throughout Grand Traverse. Love Inc., non-profits and its churches operate centers in the region for the less fortunate as well as general public. The locations can help neighbors in need to obtain infant and children's items, clothing, personal care, household items, and furniture. While some people may need to pay minimal fees, other clients may receive free clothing or goods from the thrift stores.
Similar to above is the Furniture Ministry. Love Inc. volunteers and staff will match donated appliances and furniture from donors to people in need. These items will be provided to families or individuals transitioning from homelessness. There may also be free furniture for people with a confirmed disaster, or for those involved in the Love Inc.
