Free school supply giveaways from stores and companies
Many stores, national corporations, and local businesses also help kids get free school supplies. In general, they are national corporations with local operations. While the programs vary, they will usually operate from May to September 2024, often in partnership with a charity such as the Salvation Army or Saint Vincent de Paul. These stores or companies help students from families living in or near poverty. They are provided a free gift certificate by a retailer to shop at a store, which they can use purchase their needed school supplies. Kids In Need Foundation (KINF) coordinates free school giveaway events with corporations. Target will have local, store specific assistance programs. Office Depot has annual "Backpack Giveaway" event in which a few million dollars (in aggregate) of supplies is given to kids from low-income families. There will be a backpack with as such as $100 is supplies such as paper, pencils, binders, and more.
Authorized Verizon stores that are part of TCC give free backpacks to kids. Over one thousand local stores give free clothes, electronics, sneakers, notebooks and other goods to students from grades K-12. Staples partners with Boys & Girls Clubs and other non-profits on a program known as Staples for Students as well as Staples Advantage. Each store that offers a back to school supply program will have their own means of providing assistance. Working together, these free or low cost school supplies are available in partnership with other groups as well, such as the United Way.
To apply for a school supply drive at a store, families can make inquiries into whether these programs are available to them at a local non-profit organization. The Salvation Army is often a good place for referrals.
