Help with paying storage unit costs

While specific programs dedicated to paying storage unit rental costs are limited, there are some government programs that can help as well as local charity organizations that assist, depending on the state and area. Financial assistance to pay for storage is never a priority as the first goal is always homeless prevention, but find details on how to get help with paying for rental of a storage unit below.

Government resources

Facing eviction or being unhoused can be overwhelming. In either instance, securing storage for personal belongings when not having a home to live in is a major concern. The government has a few different options (based on federal budgets) that can help pay for a public storage unit as a form of homeless prevention-rehousing.

Local county or state social services will often have information on storage cost assistance programs. Note each office can go by a different name, with examples being Department of Health and Human Services, DSS or something else.

  • Reaching out to a local social service office near you can be beneficial for any struggling family, whether they need help with paying for renting a storage unit or any other need. A local government office may offer emergency assistance programs or referrals to community organizations that help with housing, storage units, and associated costs. Find more information and a list of government benefits application sites by state, some of which help pay for rental expenses for storage.

Veterans can get help with storage needs from SSVF, or the Supportive Services for Veteran Families. This federal benefit is for veterans only (as well as any immediate family members). It is a national program with local grant money available locally.

  • The SSVF program offers extensive financial assistance, including coverage for storage costs. Key provisions include government money as a form of moving costs assistance. SSVF can cover reasonable moving expenses, such as truck rentals, hiring moving companies, and short-term storage fees or until permanent housing is secured as part of the storage help for vets from the SSVF program.

Emergency Solution Grants (ESG) are available locally, and the government money can pay for various housing costs including storage units. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) operates the service at the national level, with applications taking locally.

  • The ESG program helps low-income tenants at risk of eviction as well as currently homeless people. While the primary focus is on paying rent to stop an eviction or rehouse people, the ESG program might also connect people in need with resources for related costs, potentially including storage solutions. There are many local ESG application sites as listed on HUD Exchange.

Storage cost assistance from charities and non-profits

Local charity organizations vary widely in what they offer, however some (when funding is offered) will help pay for renting a storage unit post eviction or they help temporary homeless people pay for a place to keep their stuff. Some local non-profits also have partnerships with local storage rental companies, such as Extra Space Storage, U-Haul or Public Storage to provide lower rates or limited financial help to pay for the place.

A local United Way office helps people find storage assistance in their area. The non-profit is often a good place for referrals to local groups that then issues money as a form of storage place help. The United Way often collaborates with local charity agencies and churches to support individuals or families in crisis. They might have information on emergency assistance funds or programs that can help cover unexpected expenses like storage, and find details on United Way rent and housing assistance.

National charities with a local presence provide emergency financial help too, and while storage rental expenses are not usually the priority, money may be provided. The main options include:

  • Salvation Army provides emergency assistance, which can include funds for housing, moving and storage costs. It's advisable to contact the local Salvation Army branch to inquire about available programs and is often part of the rent payment help from local Salvation Army centers. In some instances the Salvation Army will also offer vouchers for the unit or a room.

  • Catholic Charities and their local churches offer various support services, including potential financial help with storage costs for people that were just evicted as well as money to help with moving-related expenses. All the Catholic Charity churches are unique in what they offer, and find more details on Catholic Charities housing resources near you.

  • Community Action Agencies offer grant money for rent, storage and more. These agencies are located in all cities and they offer financial help with rent and bills to people facing financial hardships, which may include assistance with moving, rehousing and storage unit fees. Find more information on rent help for storage from a community action.

Local PHAs (Public Housing Authorities) provide services to individuals facing homelessness, living in poverty or housing instability. While section 8 will rarely pay for storage (with some exceptions such as for women facing abuse), a housing authority in your area may offer referrals for temporary storage solutions during a transition to a new home or apartment.
