Some of what can be offered includes, but is not limited to, free food boxes, financial help, cash grants, counseling, information and referral to other non-profit organizations in the St. Augustine region. The St. Augustine Florida office operates a food pantry. This is available for families with minor children or senior citizens in the household, and emergency food boxes are provided right from the main office. Special Thanksgiving and Christmas meals may be offered too. In addition, Catholic Charities will always accept donations of non-perishable food and grocery items from the community, and contributions are always needed.
Homeless Prevention is wide ranging. It also includes the Elderly Services program. Housing assistance will include whatever Catholic Charities can to do provide for the basic needs necessary to prevent foreclosures, eviction, and homelessness in the community. As funding allows, Catholic Charities will offer utility bill payments, rental and mortgage assistance, security and utility deposits, family reunification, information and referral, and more.
The aid is really for people in a crisis situation. Sometimes families face hardships that can threaten people who may be already living from paycheck to paycheck when a loss of employment, unexpected illness or other family crisis impacts stretched finances. The St. John Catholic Charity Homeless Prevention Program is open to local families with seniors age 60 and above or minor children in the household.
Counseling for both financial matters, as well as more life events, is offered. Catholic Charities offers marriage, individual, and family counseling services using social workers and licensed therapists.
Community Outreach is offered for local churches, charities, and non-profits. These services can also end up benefiting the low income and struggling families. Catholic Charities strongly believes that helping people help themselves is very important, and may be the most critical thing to do in order to assist the working poor with achieving self-sufficiency and improve their quality of their life. Case workers and others from the St. Johns Catholic Charities will do whatever they can to support local churches and others as they help the needy.
The agency has operated in the region since the 1970s, and since then Catholic Charities has helped thousands of families, seniors, and children. While the amount and type of direct financial assistance they have is always limited, they can provide referrals, guidance, and just a compassionate ear.
