Society of St. Vincent de Paul assistance Washoe County and Reno.

The programs available from St. Vincent de Paul in Washoe County can help address a crisis and another aspect, the case management support, will ideally enable families to work on living without the assistance of governmental programs. There is also a low cost thrift store. Staff, which includes volunteers and full time members, also advocates for the rights of the low income. They also try to implement new programs to meet the needs of clients, often in partnership with Catholic Charities.

Food pantry and thrift store in Washoe County

Food is available in the community for applicants who qualify under the income guidelines for each appropriate program. Some of them are funded by the Department of Education and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or donations to local pantries. The main options in Reno and Washoe County are as follows.

  • -TEFAP - Emergency Food Assistance Program is available from Society of St. Vincent de Paul as a quarterly distribution that is income-based. The applicant will need to be within 130% of federal poverty guideline.
  • -Free food banks are available in Washoe County. The program is designed to supplement the needs of low income families only, and it is not a substitution of grocery shopping altogether.
  • -Soup kitchens are available in an emergency. They also serve Christmas and Thanksgiving meals too.

A low cost thrift store is open in Reno too, and it serves all of Washoe County. It sells gently used goods, including some that are online. Donate or buy furniture, bedding, tables, kitchen appliances, fans or air conditioners, computers and more. The money raised from St. Vincent de Paul thrift store helps fund the financial aid programs. Or even find websites to sell stuff, which are online thrift stores.

Emergency help, including financial from Washoe County St. Vincent

Reno St. Vincent de Paul sponsored Emergency Services is a variety of assistance programs that are offered to meet the needs of low income individuals. There are also some resources focused on the disabled, veterans, and senior citizens in Washoe County. Funding is provided by Community Service Block Grant (CSBG), FEMA, and local fund raisers. Some of the main resources are below.

 

 

 

  • -Financial aid for energy bills and utility shut-offs.
  • -Grants are available for a portion of first month's rent, or a security deposit, if the applicant has been evicted and now has a source of stable income.
  • -During the winter, Society of Saint Vincent in Reno can help with Propane or Deliverable Fuel.
  • -Rental arrearages can be addressed, in some cases using a low interest loan. This is an option when rent is past due and a qualified family is facing eviction.
  • -Referrals are given for free food in Washoe County, Foreclosures or property Taxes or other household items.

The Emergency Eviction Prevention includes a combination of placement into shelter or financial assistance from Society of Saint Vincent in Washoe County. This is available for families and adults who are at high risk of losing housing, victims of individual or community disasters, those in a medical crisis, or persons stranded from their homes.

If homelessness is being caused by unpaid electric or water bills, then financial help is also available for overdue utility payments. Any eviction help is available in the form of temporary cash assistance for income qualified applicants.

Reno St. Vincent de Paul may also work with the homeless on offering Shelter Services. Staff from the charity and Catholic Charities help with the coordination of resources to homeless individuals and families. Note that the number of beds and overall emergency shelter capacity for individuals expands during the winter months.

In combination with the place to stay, other programs include outreach and eventual placement into transitional housing. Most of the shelters in Washoe County are provided primarily through partnerships and contracts with community non-profit organizations. Some of the other case management services are provided to all clients to link them to treatment, housing referrals, employment and entitlements such as section 8.

Guidance for long term stability in Washoe County

Family Self-Sufficiency from Washoe County and Reno St. Vincent de Paul will provide participants with case management. While the long term goal is to get the person off of government benefits, there are many steps taken before that can be done.

The process will begin to identify, target, and address unmet needs. Based on that discovery process, the staff will offer support services. This ranges from referrals, advocacy and all of the follow up that is necessary to remove the various financial and employment challenges that families face in being able to move forward.

One solution in Washoe County is a Job Readiness class. Another is the GED Prep Class. This will help clients in preparing for successful job searching. Components of this include Employment Training, Parenting Skills, Basic Computer Technology, Basic Skills Literacy, and Money Management. The GED training is for St. Vincent de Paul participants who were unable to graduate from high school. There are even employment opportunities for GED candidates.

 

 

 

 

Minority as well as Senior Outreach from Society of Saint Vincent de Paul supports those target groups. This will help the client identify problems and act as a referral program for the person. They will be linked to available services in Washoe County. Components will help seniors stretch their food dollars, Find affordable housing or address issues with landlord, Supply information on Medicare/Medicaid, and more. Staff from St. Vincent in Reno also acts as a referral program for other services within local non-profit organizations.

St. Vincent in Washoe County assistance elderly families as well. Many find it more difficult to do everyday tasks without outside help. These individuals are able to stay by themselves but cannot always do the maintenance or household work necessary to maintain their homes. So volunteers from the community will help with these tasks.
