The Salvation Army is a leading church based charity in Rapides Parish. They offer everything from emergency rent assistance to grants to pay utility bills, free food, hot meals, a homeless shelter and more. Volunteers, professional social workers, and others from the organization work to help the less fortunate with everything from their basic needs to advice, mentoring, and referrals. There are also seasonal programs including free Christmas gifts, Thanksgiving turkeys and school supplies.

Other resources are offered by the Salvation Army in Alexandria. The key services that are offered from the Rapides Parish Salvation Army will include the following.

Emergency help from Salvation Army in Alexandria

Thrift store – Volunteers work here several days per week. The site is open to the public, and it sells everything from vintage clothing to furniture, birthday toys, kitchen utensils, winter attire, and much more. Anyone can shop there, and donations as well as volunteers from Rapides Parish are always needed.

Free Thanksgiving, Christmas, and School programs – The Salvation Army center in Alexandria of course has the free food pantry and clothing bank for this (see below). They also have other programs that they are involved with, and they include Angel Tree as well as Adopt a Family, which provide free gifts or presents to children. Students from K to 12 can also get free school supplies or backpacks.

Emergency financial assistance – This is rare, but using money from the Family Store, some assistance may be available. It generally covers utility or water bills, rent, medications, and any emergency which could lead to homelessness. There are also programs such as financial help from Louisiana utility companies.

When applying for help, the following information should be available. The process will require proof of income, residency, as well as identification from all household members. If there is an eviction or disconnection letter (from landlord or utility company) please be sure to bring it. The salvation Army also wants to be sure the recipient can pay future bills on their own too.
