Salvation Army assistance programs Portsmouth region and South Hampton Roads.

There are many social services run by the Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Franklin area Salvation Army. Using money from the Red Kettle annual donation service, United Way grants, and fund raisers held by the staff and volunteers, there may be financial help given for rent, utility bills, food, clothes, and more. The Salvation Army thrift store is also involved in collecting funds to pay for the assistance programs administered, or the Family Store is involved in free Christmas gift, birthday toys, and back to school supply events.

The resources fall into a few different categories. There is of course financial aid available on occasion. This can be for expenses including rent, utility bills, prescription drug medications, or gas vouchers for a job. This form of South Hampton Roads Salvation program is of course very limited in scope and capacity. Intake appointments are needed.

When funding exists, it is recommended to bring a copy of a utility bill and/or landlord eviction letter. Or bring a doctor notice of prescription from a pharmacy. Also the applicant needs a place in place for self-sufficiency. While the Salvation Army case worker can help work out some of those details, the work and effort needs to be done by the applicant. Only the person seeking financial help for paying rent or energy bills can overcome their own personal hardship.

Another category of aid is issuing free vouchers for supplies. Or some clients may be directed to buy goods at the thrift store. The difference will usually depend on what is causing the need. For example, does the applicant have an income or are they trying to recover from a house-fire or natural disaster. Or is the Portsmouth or Franklin area individual recovering from a homeless event and needs some items for their new home.

Based mainly on the reason for the need, the Portsmouth, Franklin and Suffolk Salvation Army will determine whether they can give free stuff or whether the applicant needs to pay for low cost items they need. In either case there may be furniture, kitchen supplies, appliances, books, TVs, computers, beds, cribs, and much more available.

Two subsets of this type of free items are the food pantry and seasonal services. Very low income families facing hunger can use the pantry, and children as well as senior citizens can benefit from the Adopt a Family Christmas program. There are also free school supplies and Thanksgiving meals served too along with a soup kitchen in Portsmouth Virginia. These South Hampton Roads Salvation Army programs rely heavily on donations as well.

Senior citizens also have resources available to them. The South Hampton Roads Salvation Army has volunteers that focus on the elderly. They also partner with groups including Agency on Aging. Whether it is a local field-trip or a meal being delivered to their home, help is given.

Development and case management services

Franklin, Portsmouth and Suffolk Salvation Army Family Services will always stress this. Since all of the financial aid and material goods provided are a “hand-up” and not a free hand-out, the applicant needs to take initiative to overcome their own financial hardship. This will be contingent before any money is paid out for items such as a prescription medication or car repair. Also, monthly housing costs (energy bills or rent) make no sense to pay for one month if the same problem will occur the next month.

The charity can serve as a resource center. Staff will interact with the client and partners from South Hampton Roads Virginia. If employment or an increase in income is needed, then side hustle jobs or employment training centers in Virginia and employment agencies may be the solution. If the client is in excessive debt, then the Salvation Army process can direct the client to a non-profit credit counselor.

There are other parts of development/case management for both adults and children. Youth can enroll into the low cost summer camp. Or their parents can enroll them into after school care. Adults also have access to rehabilitation services, general counseling for any number of needs, local job fairs, budgeting workshops, and many others. A wide array of services are organized in the community.
