Free back to school supply giveaways in Milwaukee County

Struggling families in Milwaukee (both the city and county) can get free school supplies for their kids and there are also classroom items for teachers. Many of the organizations that giveaway stuff to kids partner with local school districts or the United Way Backpack Coalition. Find details below on school supply assistance programs that may be near you in Milwaukee WI, with contact information listed too.

Note that many of the charities and giveaways listed below operate just a few days per year during the back to school shopping season. The free items passed out are on a first come-served basis. There may be everything from Chromebooks to backpacks, sneakers, free clothes for students from grades K-12 and more. The places listed below focus on the school supply programs however there are also free clothes closets in Milwaukee County which can be turned too for help.

Resources are limited, but the volunteer driven charity gives out free year round items with a back to school supply program too. Clothes, sneakers, winter coats and writing materials and more for students.

Hmong American Friendship Association, Inc.

One day per year is a free back to school event, in which kids can get free school supplies, food, and more. Students of any ethnicity in Milwaukee can get help. Free haircuts, backpacks full of pens, paper and other goods are given out with same day registration.

Salvation Army Milwaukee
The Christian church/charity gives everything from free year round clothes to school supplies. Get everything from calculators to pens, highlighters and note books to information on financial help and free tablet programs for the low-income. United Way of Greater Milwaukee
They run the Backpack Coalition program that gives thousands of local kids free school supplies. It is for Milwaukee County as well as other nearby regions, including Waukesha County. The even partners with local school districts, companies and others to help low-income families get the supplies they need for school or educational purposes, with teachers assisted too. School Choice Wisconsin

The non-profit helps students in private or public schools. They advocate for the community with an annual free school supply giveaway available. Students from single mom run homes, migrants and others will get free stuff as available. There are also scholarship programs, educational programs for adults and more.

A Place of Refuge Ministries of South Wisconsin

A thrift store is on site but the charity will also help asylum seekers and refugees can get educational stuff. Books, tablets, clothes, and so much more.

Wellpoint Care Network
The organization holds an annual Back-to-School Bash with free backpacks, supplies and community resources. While it is normally in August of each year, the schedule is announced on the organization’s main event page at https://wellpointcare.org/media-and-events and through its community outreach team. Free school supply giveaway events run by Wellpoint typically draw hundreds of families and are long-established in Milwaukee.

Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center, Inc.

They help Native American households only. Year-round assistance is arranged, with seasonal programs for students. Get free school uniforms, tech products, shoes, jeans, writing material and more.

St. Vincent De Paul

Many also run recurring school-supply drives that are open to the public. Blessed Savior Catholic Church
Multiple locations of this Catholic Church - charity helps low-income families. Kids will get a backpack full of free school supplies based on their grade. Paper, crayons, protractors, lunchboxes and much more (based on age) is given out.
