The Salvation Army helps low-income families in Middlesex County and New Brunswick New Jersey. They try to meet the basic needs, including some or all of the following. Assistance distributed can range from a free bag of groceries, a hot meal, or financial assistance for paying your rent or an electric bill to free school supplies or Christmas gifts. The service centers are open to those who are struggling, and there are also Family Stores (thrift locations) for bargains. The Salvation Army also helps with long term stability, and that includes gas vouchers or a free bus pass for work, substance abuse treatment services and more.

Free food or hot meals from the Salvation Army

Most Salvation Army centers in Middlesex County operate a food bank, free pantry, or soup kitchen. Staff, relying heavily on volunteers and donations, will do their best to end hunger in Middlesex County. Whenever possible the locations will provide free hot meals year-round to anyone in need of short term support, and no questions will be asked.

As resources allow, the food pantries can often provide several days worth of groceries, government commodities, and fresh fruits or vegetables to families. Case managers can provide many forms of assistance, including information, referrals to government benefits, advocacy, and limited amounts of needs-based financial assistance for emergency bills and expenses.

Assisting with housing issues, including rent and homeless prevention, is a focus. Those who qualify may receive the following.

  • Transitional shelter can provide people a place to stay, especially during the winter to get out of the cold. Some New Jersey sites serve as long-term transitional shelters. Those who stay there can also gain access to additional supportive services including referral, counseling and ESL classes.
  • While very limited, families facing eviction in Middlesex may qualify for emergency rental assistance. It would be at most a partial payment. Or referrals may be provided to partner agencies or charities in the region.

 

 

 

  • Heating and utility bill assistance can help families with children and senior citizens stay warm during the winter. They will help keep your power switched on, and may be able to mediate a solution with your utility provider.
  • Get assistance with finding permanent housing. This can include low cost, free, and safe supportive housing facilities for seniors and the elderly. There may also be apartments for vulnerable young adults. Or work with a case manager to find a new home or apartment to live in the New Jersey area.

Other services provided are extensive. Clothing, thrift stores, and other support such as Back To Work Programs are available. As everyone knows, buying new clothing can be a drain on tight budgets, so the thrift stores are open to the public. Vouchers can be passed out to people facing a disaster and/or the very low income.

Middlesex New Jersey families can work with a staff member for self-sufficiency. These include using services that will help people find a job and can include resume preparation, use of the internet and job searching assistance.

Childcare programs are offered by some centers. If a location doesn’t offer it they usually have referrals to other local providers. Some Salvation Army locations in New Jersey offer Pre-School childcare programs serving children aged 3-5 years. Or some resources may be for children up to age 12.

As there are both free as well as low cost programs for low income parents (or single moms or dads) who have child care needs. Seasonal assistance, including back to school supplies and free Christmas toys. The Middlesex County Salvation Army is well known for distributing material and maybe even financial assistance during the Christmas season. Some of the components of it are as follows.

  • Angel Tree can offer free gifts and toys for children. Other goods may be offered for seniors or those in a nursing home.
  • Bell ringers raise funds from the Red Kettles.
  • Adopt a Family is when people from the community donate gifts and time to children. It is similar to the concept behind the Angel Tree.
