Mesa County Salvation Army assistance programs.

In an effort to help low income families in Mesa County, the Salvation Army runs a multitude of assistance programs for the community. They support clients of all races, ages, and backgrounds. There may be free school supplies, food, shelter, clothing from a thrift store, help for paying rent or utilities and other resources given out by the church.

Case workers from the Salvation Army will meet the client to assess their needs. There are also volunteers on site who work at the food pantry or thrift store in Grand Junction. Others work on the Angel Tree free Christmas gift program or collect money from the Red Kettle bell ringing campaign during the holidays. Those volunteers stock the shelves as well, hold food drives, and help service meals at the holidays among other work they do.

Free food, clothes, and vouchers

One of the key goals if to offer those everyday items people need to get it through a week. The Salvation Army in Grand Junction has a few resources they use to meet this need. They run a food pantry, clothing closet, and thrift store. All of these are for offer those basic needs.

In some cases, the family will need to pay some of the costs. This will be at the thrift store. Other instances free items are given out, and the food pantry and vouchers from the clothing closet are used here. Clients may be given a free box of groceries. Or there may be school supplies, clothes for work, or winter jackets.

Mesa County Salvation Army Family Services

This program includes both the financial assistance as well as the case management. There are social workers that coordinate this program. Based on many factors (income, age, residency, disability payments, etc.) the client may be found qualified. If so, there may be cash grants to pay some critical bills, and that may be rent, medications, gasoline, or utility bills. There may be some other critical household expenses paid too. Or find other money to help pay rent.

Free case management is always available. Even if someone does not need energy bill or rent help, and if they only need say food, they can still talk to a Mesa County Salvation Army social worker. Or even if someone does not even use any other resources, but just wants some general advice, then case management is still arranged.

Housing support includes an overnight shelter in Grand Junction. The Salvation Army also has a soup kitchen for the homeless. This will serve a hot breakfast or lunch. Or a cold, bagged lunch may be passed out too. The shelter will, in a perfect world, direct the person to a long term housing solution. Which may be transitional housing. Or when security deposit help is needed, or a few bucks for first month rent, if the homeless person is stable this may be arranged. Or locate Colorado homeless prevention and rehousing programs.

Volunteer driven assistance programs

There are a few main ones. They combine both donations from the community along with help from volunteers. The main programs are the Angel Tree, which is at Christmas. Businesses as well as people from Mesa County Salvation Army buy toys that kids want, as identified from the Angel Tree tag on the tree. Both boys and girls under the age of 13 can apply.

Salvation Army in Mesa County also gives free school supplies. Backpacks, shoes, notebooks, pens, pencils, and other goods are passed out. This too is donation driven. In some cases a gift card is used for say a Target shopping spree.

The other two are the thrift store as well as Red Kettle. The store sells gently used items. It is a gently used location. Furniture, tables, chairs, couches, toys for birthday or Christmas, vintage items, and more is sold. When it comes to raising money, the Red Kettle campaign starts up during the holidays. Donate some change or a buck or too to the Salvation Army bell ringers.
