Salvation Army assistance programs in Medina County.

Helping the working poor, disadvantaged, and vulnerable is the Salvation Army center in Medina County. The Christian Charity, which is a church-based group but assists people of all faiths, is one of the primary non-profit agencies in the region. Everything from free food or school supplies to homeless shelters, rent or energy bill help, or Angel Tree for free Christmas gifts (and more) is offered. Case workers try to provide the support that a family needs.

Assistance for bills in Medina County from the Salvation Army

When it is difficult to keep the lights on or to pay the rent on time, this is one example of when the Salvation Army steps forward to help. The food pantry can also be used to feed the hungry. They offer housing, utility bill or food assistance to low income families that are in a crisis. Any money available will only be for partial payments, but it may give the client a little more time to apply for more long-term support.

Rental as well as energy bill assistance is sporadic throughout the year. The key determination of whether someone is assisted will be if they meet the qualifications that the charity has. There is also limited funding at the Medina County Salvation Army, so this too will determine whether assistance is given, and whether it comes in the form of a loan or some other method. Supportive Senor Housing is also arranged. When an elderly person of the community is older, lonely, or maybe unable to care for themselves, the Christian charity steps forward. There are low cost apartments in the community as well as transitional housing programs. The Medina County Salvation Army will try to help senior citizens have a safe and enjoyable place to live.

Free holiday assistance is arranged. Whether this is a meal, clothing or a gift for a child, or some other form of assistance, the Salvation Army in Medina County will assist. The largest of these programs is Adopt a Family at Christmas with the second biggest being free Thanksgiving turkey meals for families in poverty.

Each of the holiday programs used donations from the public. People, businesses, churches, and other groups collect toys, boxes of food, gently used winter coats, shoes, and more. Volunteer’s sort and package the goods, then they are given to less fortunate families in the community.

The goal is to ensure someone in crisis, or families in poverty, have Christmas presents, meals, and more. Or if a person needs say a Turkey at Thanksgiving, or free school clothing for their kids, this too is provided.

Salvation Army Medina County case workers also give free advice and information to clients. The Family Service program also includes case management, and the intent here is to help the family break the cycle of poverty, unemployment, and/or lack of education. The center in Medina Ohio always encourages education, such as GED and vocational school. Keeping up with the ever-changing economy is critical to making a livable wage in the ultra-competitive economy.

Also, going hand in hand with this, is financial literacy. As no matter how little (or much) someone makes in income at their job, if they spend it frivolously they will never get ahead. Therefore the Medina County Salvation Army, it volunteers, and staff members help in this capacity. They advise single moms, seniors on a fixed income/pension, and others that are so often struggling to live on a budget.
