The government programs and agencies listed below are some of the leading resources in Jefferson County. The number and type of services they offer will vary widely, and many have conditions that need to be met. In addition to the rent assistance provided, which is mainly aimed at preventing evictions and homelessness in the community, the non-profits will offer case management, counseling and programs to help people become self-sufficient over the mid to long term. As the only solution to a housing crisis is to ensure individuals can pay their rent, on their own, without the need for aid.

Jefferson Community Action Programs (JeffCAP) - Resources administered include rental/mortgage  assistance to stop an eviction. Funds may also be available for utility bills. Housing counseling is offered by specialists. Salvation Army centers (phone 899-4569) may have referrals to shelters, transitional housing, or grants for rental costs. Financial aid is very limited.

Jefferson Family Care Center runs a homeless shelter. After clients have stabilized, they may receive referrals to low income apartments or housing units in the community. It is run in partnership with Catholic Charities. Main phone is (504) 347-0772.

Southeast Louisiana Legal Services can help with a number of housing problems in Jefferson Parish. The agency administers everything from free legal advice to prevent evictions to information on utility disconnections. They address disputes over security deposits, public benefits, and more. Jefferson Parish Community Development Department - Call  (504) 736-6262. Runs the federal government funded Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program. This can provide money for security deposits, funds to pay rent for up to 18 months, help for back rent, and other aid.
