Food Assistance in Johnson County, Kansas

Johnson County is one of the fastest-growing and most affluent counties in the Midwest, but poverty and food insecurity exist here too — often hidden by the county's overall prosperity. The county sits on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro, and its food assistance network, listed below, reflects that geography: Harvesters – The Community Food Network, the region's Feeding America food bank, serves both the Kansas and Missouri sides of the KC area, providing food through over 700 partner agencies.

Johnson County Aging & Human Services operates three county-run food pantries at multi-service centers in Lenexa, Mission, and Gardner — all income-qualified and by appointment. Beyond those, a dense network of church pantries, nonprofit organizations, and drive-thru distributions fills the county's suburbs. Many sites accept drive-through pickup, require little or no documentation, and serve residents regardless of religion.

Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas operates two full-service locations in Overland Park and Olathe. Shawnee Community Services and the Salvation Army provide walk-in access across the central part of the county. Many pantries distribute fresh produce, dairy, meat, and bread in addition to shelf-stable goods. Client-choice pantries — where visitors select their own groceries — are available at several locations including Shawnee Community Services and Village Presbyterian Church.

Families with infants may find baby formula, diapers, and hygiene supplies at select sites. Jewish Family Services offers a unique kosher and non-kosher pantry including pet food for animal owners. Johnson County Community College operates the Cav Cupboard for enrolled students facing food insecurity. During the holiday season, a number of locations provide Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets as well as toys for children. For current distribution schedules or to find a drive-thru mobile pantry near you, Harvesters' online food locator at harvesters.org (website: https://www.harvesters.org/get-food-assistance/food-locator) is the most up-to-date resource.
