Allentown area Salvation Army assistance programs.

An extensive amount of assistance is offered by the Allentown Salvation Army Social Services Department. Qualified families can receive emergency assistance for needs such as food, clothing, energy bills, rent, and much more. The non-profit Salvation Army is committed to helping the needy. Appointments must be made at the Allentown or Lehigh County centers in order to apply.

Food pantries and emergency food assistance is available at the Salvation Army, and it includes hot meals year-round for families and individuals who need help. Assistance is offered at local Service and Worship Centers. One example of a program is Round-Up for the Hungry. It offers fresh food and perishable items to the needy, and was created in partnership between the Salvation Army and Giant Eagle. Other food programs include Holiday Meals, Backpack Feeding Program for Children, Food Pantries, After-School Meals for Children, and Supper Club (during the week).

Health care and medical bill assistance is offered from the Birmingham Free Health Clinic. It provides uninsured and low income Allentown residents with quality health care, and is available to qualified families within the community. Medical care and services are offered for free. Meals for seniors are offered, including luncheons. Basically a free nutritious lunch is offered to senior citizens and the elderly, and it is usually offered a few times per month. After the meal has been served, a food box is distributed. This program and service is offered by an application process.

Across the nation, the Salvation Army is on the frontlines of the fight against poverty and hunger. They provide food boxes and warm meals to people in need of some short term help, but who are unable to provide for themselves due to a crisis during these challenging economic times. The demand for food is always high, and is increasing double digit rates.

Heating/Fuel Counseling/Utility Assistance is all available from the Allentown Pennsylvania Salvation Army. The primary resource is the HeatShare program, which provides assistance with paying utility bills for households, in particular those with lower incomes that have received a shut-off notice. The Salvation Army offers more general utility bill assistance throughout the greater Pennsylvania and Lehigh County region. The centers have a number of social service caseworkers that can help individuals and families pay their utility bills, including water, in order to get through emergency crisis and to get their service on. You need to apply for this program, and in-person requests are received throughout the year at local Salvation Army centers. Aid is offered during normal weekday hours. You can also get information via referrals from other human service agencies and telephone inquiries. One of the main programs available, that the Salvation Army can refer people too, is the Pennsylvania LIHEAP program.

Clothing assistance is provided. Several Salvation Army thrift stores will sell gently used or almost new clothing and household items. All items sold are at greatly reduced prices, and the thrift stores are open to the public. The Salvation Army in Allentown also offers vouchers that can be used to acquire clothing, and these are generally offered for single adults coping with disasters, children who need winter coats, or those with an extreme financial need. Additional vouchers may be offered for household items, and these are available to individuals and families in the region. Vouchers are only provided from an application process.

Disaster assistance and emergency response is a key service. The agency may be able to help with both man-made disasters (such as a fire) and natural issues (such as an earthquake). The Salvation Army is there to provide practical support and compassion to those in real need who are faced with a crisis. Food, financial assistance, guidance, and other social services are offered.

Christmas assistance in Allentown includes programs such as Adopt-a-Family, Holiday Dinners, Operation Toy Lift and Treasures for Children. They offer free gifts, coats, toys, and meals for families with children, seniors, and others in need of help. These various programs rely on donations from generous people like you. Individuals are able to actively participate, donate and make someone's holiday better. Thousands of people and local businesses across Allentown Pennsylvania donate clothing and gifts that are shared with those who need help.

 

 

 

They also want to coordinate volunteers visit nursing home residents and hospital patients to bring them some Christmas gifts, cheer, and fellowship as the Salvation Army wants to touch those in Allentown who may be feeling alone during the holidays.
