Seniors in Alabama can receive help with their basic needs, whether housing, medical, transportation or more. There is also financial help for older people for paying bills as well as support from local Area Agencies on Aging in AL. Many of the Area Agency on Aging centers also serve as disability resource centers. So they can not only help senior citizens in the state but also disabled people - no matter their age. Whether it is money from the government for seniors over the age of 55, help applying for social security, free food or other resources, some form of assistance is available.

Programs that help senior citizens in AL with medical needs

The Alabama Medicaid Waiver for the Elderly and Disabled can help senior clients retain their independence and stay in their own homes. It is part of the federal / state Medicaid benefit with many of the same qualifications in place. The program provides services to seniors that allow them to live safely in their own homes or apartments or as long as it is appropriate rather than a nursing home.

  • Case managers from the various Area Agencies on Aging offices in Alabama work with qualified clients to help them develop a care-based plan according to the clients’ health care or medical needs. Depending upon the results of this plan, and the care they need, participants may receive aid including free home-delivered frozen meals, personal care, companion services, homemaker, respite, or adult day care. In some cases, seniors may qualify for rent or housing assistance vouchers from government programs such as section 202 housing.

Information on Medicare benefits and insurance counseling is offered from the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Specialists, coordinators and insurance counselors that are part of SHIP can assist people in making informed choices when it comes to finding, and applying for, insurance. They also help elderly people identify and avoid fraud.

SHIP also works with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, local Area Agencies on Aging offices, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Free prescription medication can be provided by the Alabama SenioRx program. This is offered for individuals who are age 55+ or older, and who have disabilities and who have been diagnosed with chronic medical conditions requiring daily medication. The Alabama Department of Department of Senior Services works with Area Agency On Aging offices to help people pay for medications to prevent more serious health problems and also help them manage chronic illnesses. The SenioRx is combined with Wellness.

Free food boxes and meals in Alabama for older residents

Food, Nutrition and general Wellness for seniors is offered, as adequate and high quality nutrition is especially important for older adults because of their increased vulnerability to chronic diseases as well as illnesses. Adequate nutrition can help retain their ability to live at home in the community. Many non-profits in Alabama, often in partnership with Area Aging on Agency offices, provide groceries, vitamins, protein drinks and more to older people.

For those who are homebound, Home Delivered Meals are offered too. These are provided, mostly by volunteers, to an eligible client at their home. The Alabama Area Agency On Aging helps deliver millions of meals to seniors. The  meals, most of which are free to qualified elderly, must provide up to one-third of an individuals needs.

At the same time, many seniors can gain access to information from the community on other benefits, such as financial assistance and case management.

Seniors in Alabama can get help with their bills too. There are low-income energy bill assistance program (LIHEAP) for paying utility bills and money to help pay for housing costs (rent, a mortgage, etc.) as well as transportation services for seniors over the age of 55 or 60. A number of charities and local groups help older adults get the funds they need to pay for basic needs

The Legal Assistance program of Alabama provides older adults with access to a statewide system of legal professionals, volunteer lawyers and attorneys. They can help in dealing with legal issues faced by seniors over the age of 55. Some of the services include free preparation of Legal Documents, applying for government benefits, wills, Medicare issues and similar topics.

  • The free legal aid works to protect seniors, secure their rights, advise them on benefits and help ensure the dignity of older people. The legal program is administered by the Alabama Department of Senior Services through local Area Agencies on Aging as well as legal aid firms in AL. Priority is given to low income, older individuals with greatest social and economic need, low-income minority older individuals, Native Americans, and also older individuals who live in rural area

Employment and job programs are provided in Alabama by Senior Community Service Employment Program. Those with poor employment prospects and who are at least 55 years old may be able to be placed into a part time job. The United States Department of Labor and the Older Americans Act provided grants for this jobs program.
